That'll Teach Me for Thinking About It

For years now, I've endeavored to eat food better both for my body and my planet, but I do indulge the occasional cherry licorice hankering, such as the one that came creeping earlier this evening. Even in that moment of weakness, I deliberately purchased the recyclable paperboard box o' licorice rather than the throw-away plastic bag of licorice, and left the store feeling somewhat less disgusting for the experience. I opened the box, tingling in anticipation of that sweet, sweet smell of artificial cherry flavoring, and discovered ...

... a plastic bag.

At least I turned down the bag they offered me for carrying the box of the bag of licorice out of the store.

I recall at least one movement to reduce such waste in packaging in a childhood now nearly two decades behind me, but in that time, GoGurt, Lunchables, Pringles Snack Stacks and passels of other pointless packaging promotions have piled into our landfills, every bit as heedlessly as needlessly. I wish the present trend toward greenliness in automobile purchases would trickle down to everyday purchases, but I wish even more that people would stop buying so much shit that they just end up throwing away. I hate to break it to you, kids, but driving our Priuses (Prii?) to Whole Foods won't save the planet if we continue to buy twice as much shit, with a jillion times more made-up-word packaging schemes, as Americans did in the 1950s.

So, yeah, I need to do something with this plastic bag now. Any suggestions?
