Um. That was a bit of a filler episode, wasn't it?
- I had the feeling everyone was a bit awkward in this ep. I didn't find the Alice character very compelling - I'm sure part of it was supposed to reflect her being under the influence of the manticore, but the end result is that she came across as very distant to me; the relationship between Merlin and Gaius didn't make much sense to me, either, with Gaius not listening to Merlin at all, and I had the impression the actors themselves didn't really know what to do with it; I guess they felt they needed to have some M/A interaction in the ep, but, um... When Arthur makes his servant run with the target in 1x01, it feels like an exceptionally berky moment where Arthur is trying to show off to his friends, and not something that usually happens. How does this translate to that four or so years of character development later? o_O
I think I'll just forget that scene happened, because it doesn't even make any sense, and it felt like they were shoe-horning it in there for the sheer purpose of having some M/A.
- But let's focus on the good things! Merlin looks really pretty in candle-light! Also, slightly fluffy bed-hair, aww. And the way he looked at Gaius before he realised Alice wasn't all good, just, so cute.
- Finger-porn ep! Merlin browsing those books at the library, and then Arthur in his scenes with Uther, ngghhh. If nothing else, this episode still brought the pretty.
- Oh, Geoffrey. Clearly he protects the library with his life... though not with a feather duster. He'd be one of those annoying shop assistants who hover over you constantly, wouldn't he? I LOL'ed when Merlin sent him back to sleep. Also, hey, Merlin doing wordless magic!
- I really liked the design of the manticore. Though I LOL'ed when it ended up reacting like a small, angry dog. I liked the idea behind it, though; can we integrate this creature with the previous ep and come up with some kind of magic epic? Its potential was wasted in this ep, IMHO.
- I was really happy to see Merlin bitching about Uther's hypocrisy. It's sometimes hard to tell what Merlin's feelings on Uther are, exactly, since he spends so much time protecting him, so it's nice to be reminded of the very basic reason Merlin has to dislike him. Some fics portray Merlin as being terrified of Uther, but I always kind of get the sense that Merlin doesn't have an awful lot of respect for Uther, and would mouth off to him in a second (or possibly pat him on the head as though he were a small, rabid dog), if both Gaius and Arthur didn't remind him at regular intervals that he's the king and could have Merlin's head.
- I'm glad Gaius saved Alice in the end. For a moment, I feared he was going to let her die, which wouldn't have made much sense, so yay.
- So suddenly Merlin's word does count for something? I suppose Alice isn't a noble, which changes everything, but hey, Arthur listening to Merlin for once! (Though I agree that it wasn't his choice to make, found it strange that he did - and why would Arthur immediately be suspicious of Gaius after twenty years of loyal service, anyway? *facepalm*)
- I like the little bits of back story we keep getting. They're fairly consistent in how they portray younger Gaius, too - he was scared, and a bit of a coward when it came to standing up to Uther, but he also appears to have saved quite a few people. Also, hey, Uther's got a food-taster. Surely there's something that could be done with that in fic?
- Edit: I forgot to mention Arthur's lolarious attempt at comforting Merlin.
'How's punching me in the arm supposed to make me feel better?'
'It works with the knights.'
'Well, the knights are a bit thick, aren't they?'
'... I'm a knight.'
(Dialogue from memory.) Oh, boys. <3
All in all, a pretty forgettable ep, but I'm awaiting the gifs and caps of the boys' hands. :D
In other news, I got the job! \o/ Thank you to everyone who crossed appendages/sent good luck wishes; I'm sure they had their effect. :DDD I've had my first training yesterday (along with three other people they've selected), and it looks like the downside is going to be that we get paid per amount of work done rather than per hour, which means that we're likely to end up working two-three hours for one hour of pay, at first, because the coding is going to take some getting used to. On the upside, it turns out we have to work minimum eight hours a week, but we're welcome to do more - it's entirely up to us, which is great. \o/
I'm not sure if this is new or old news, but apparently some
cut/extra scenes from S5 of Doctor Who have been posted. Oh, Amy and Eleven, how so cute? :D
