I'm crossing my fingers on this one... Mom and Dad are actually okay with the idea of me dorming for the next two months (the last two months of senior year!) Crucial date would be the 15th (that would most likely be the day that I move in.)
Initially, the plan was that I begin the dorm life next year, while I'm busy finishing a thesis and completing my 5th year.
Come to think of it, with the schedule I have now, I think I could manage commuting home everyday... but dorming is so much more exciting!!! You learn to be independent, how to budget your time and money, how to get along with and meet new people, and you learn new skills you never thought you had in you! (cooking, cleaning...singing... LOL!) Dorming is more than just finding a place near school to sleep, take a shower and cook your meals.
The last time I was dorming was in second year. I really needed to since my classes everyday was at 7:30. And since I didn't want to contribute to my dad's high blood pressure, I proposed that I dorm for about three months. It was difficult at first, since I wasn't used to sharing my space with other people I didn't know so well yet (I transferred dorms too). Aside from the fact that my parents were not really comfortable to the idea at first. For the first few weeks I'd get homesick even if I knew that I could just commute and be home in about two hours.
But eventually, I learned to be more independent and I had extra fun with my friends since they had time to drop by the place every now and then. I'd even say that it was during that time that I had accomplished a lot of work in terms of personal writings as well as high marks in various classes. There was no reason to be mediocre in studies since the school was just a walking distance away.
For sure, dorming helps bring out those hidden talents and skills within you... in my case, I started to learn more about myself and had a new perspective on a lot of things-- like how to budget, and how to negotiate. It brings out the leader in you-- only if you'd allow it.
Okay, I could go on saying how excited I am about being able to dorm again. But as of now, I'll just keep my fingers crossed on my parents giving the GO signal and me starting to pack up and plan everything out.
