The sun shone softly through sheer curtains, illuminating though not touching the two figures that lay on the bed, one under and one on top of the blankets. Black hair contrasted with white pillow linens, and soft breathing made slight movements ( Read more... )

There was a grunt and a murmur, and Porthos turned his face into the pillow, even as one hand autmatically went up to stroke her hair.

"Easy, love, easy," he murmured, thinking she was having more nightmares nad not realizing she was awake.

Her eyes went wide, then creased at the corners as a grin quirked the corners of her mouth. -I'm being cuddled by Porthos!- The grin faded. -A Porthos who's in love with me.-

She gently pushed at him. "Wake up."

"Uhg?" he snorted and then sat up quickly, looking around, looking exauhsted as he had spent the night trying to keep Brenda stil and comforted.

"Oh. You're awake," he mumbled, smiling at her. "Sleep well?"

"Yes...." She cocked her head and looked up at him. "But it doesn't look like you did."

Porthos panted. He was trying to keep up, but he was no runner, and Brenda had long since dissappeared. He had no idea where he was going, only following the footprints in the ground and the scuffled leaves, sweat pouring down his face, and the ridiculous clothing that servant had put him in soaked in sweat. He was exauhsted, dehydrated, and humiliated, and finally he gave up, stopping and leaning against a tree, struggling for breath.

"What a foold she'll think me," he panted, leaning over. "But why? I'm a pirate and horseman, no runner."

Then she was back, looking as though she'd only gone for a light stroll instead of a twelve mile run, frowning in concern as she put a hand on his back and offered him her water bottle.

"I'm fine," he coughed, but accepted the water, blushing even under his already red face.

She gently helped him to stand upright, those icey blue eyes showing concern. "I should have thought. You probably ride a lot more than you run."

Brenda stopped and came back to him, eyes icey and face still as though made from marble. "Don't mock what you don't understand," she said in a voice a little lower than her usual one. "And don't speak of it where others can hear."

She kept him pinned with that icey Bat glare for a few more minutes, but then remembered what both Prudence and Clark had told her about pushing people away and softened, taking his hand. "Let's go."

He was unsure at first, then followed her.

She hesitated, but then took his hand again and led him to the study and over to the Grandfather clock. "Tell no one."

Her eyes looked up into his, then her mouth twitched at the corners as she turned away and used her free hand to change the clock hands to a certain position. The clock swung away from the wall smoothly, revealing a set of stairs going down into darkness. Brenda started forward, tugging gently on his hand. "Come on."

"If Prudence and Clark approve," she said softly, smiling but not looking away from Rachel's costume. "I'm the baby of the family."

"I see no traces of baby," he blinked, looking her up and down.

She blushed and smirked. And elbowed him gently in the stomach.
