Brenda stopped and came back to him, eyes icey and face still as though made from marble. "Don't mock what you don't understand," she said in a voice a little lower than her usual one. "And don't speak of it where others can hear."

He realized he'd something very wron and frowned deeply.

"I'm sorry, my lady, truly, I should have no made jest," he said softly, completely sincere.

She kept him pinned with that icey Bat glare for a few more minutes, but then remembered what both Prudence and Clark had told her about pushing people away and softened, taking his hand. "Let's go."

He was unsure at first, then followed her.

"Clark says you saved my life last night," she said softly, letting go and walking at his side without looking up. "Thank you."

"Like I could have stood by?" he asked, voice soft. "I couldn't do that to any woman, much less you."

She ducked her head a little lower, staring at the path and feeling her cheeks flush as she remembered how easily she'd been captured. -Not a Bat yet.-

"Hey, it's alright," he said, putting an arm around her. "I wasn' do great m'self. And they have my sword... so now I'm weaponless. Which was probably good for your friend."

"You were suffering a severe culture shock." She looked up at him as they came to one of the side doors. "I've been training for this since I was fifteen."

He waited until they were inside and he listened to make sure they were alone, then looked. "I still missed a bloody ape-man flying at me," he said. "What work?"
