Ref: Sebastian's seduction of the circus girl, where he basically offers an opportunity for her to betray her boyfriend but she has to take advantage of it...
It seems to me in Kuroshitsuji, a demon or an angel cannot make a human do anything, and cannot act on its own will. Instead, it can only provide the means and opportunity for a human to act upon human motives. Which means evil should result only when the human's designs are evil. If they are good, then the results are good.
So--what is the difference between an angel and a demon, really? The angels commit atrocities which give the humans a chance to rise to the occasion and show their good sides--but if humans fail, are they not showing their evil sides which are supposedly elicited by demons? The demons usurp doing good works so that the humans can wallow in more petty distractions and do not need to band together or challenge themselves to develop personally--but if the humans instead choose to do good works in addition...?
If all the spirit beings offer is a choice, then the definition of which 'kind' of spirit is completely arbitrary and dependent upon what the human decides to do.
The only apparent difference is the demons 'eat souls'. But never is it stated that the Kuroshitsuji 'angels' don't, so...
In Kuroshitsuji I think the author deliberately makes demons & angels virtually the same other than the angel has more ability to take direct action in this life & the demon has more ability to take action in the afterlife (devouring souls- the angels in K don't seem to be able to do anything once a human dies). In other words I think angels are more proactive in life & demons more proactive in afterlife in the K world."course that is the anime version which is not canon -don't know if season 2 reflected the author's ideas at all! Sorry if I'm not real clear- I'm sick & on meds so fuzzybrained & not thinking very well-
