Cotangent, Secant, Cosecant?!!
Has anyone run into the Cotangent or Secant or Cosecant functions since learning them in High School? Does anyone use them for anything? I do seem to remember a few mentions from calculus that fussed about secants, but why do we have special names for these things?
I'm supposed to teach these, and motivate their use, but I'm not motivated about them myself. Help??
OK, I do remember when I was a cheerleader that we had a cheer that had a line that had the lines "Secant, Tangent, Cosine, Sine/ Three Point One Four One Five Nine" -- but I was hoping for something a tad more practical. ;)
