Denny's Court Magic Rules Masterpost

Oct 04, 2013 19:09

Well, here we are. All of the major rules we have for magic in the Denny's Verse for The Secret Treehouse. Let's light this firecracker!

Rules from Me, or just general rules thought up as a group (So, not me at all): 1: The only confirmed characters that have magical abilities are ERod, Sursum Ursa, She-Rod and Roses (See Astra's section for her rules. If you want to use more, please use Fuzzy's Characters List for more details (Link here).

Rule 2: Magic can be taught from any age as long as you have the ability to learn it. However, for obvious reasons, it is best to be taught from a young age.

Rule 3 (Formed with assistance from the Tinychat that inspired this): Paladins kind of exist- She Rod is one. I'm going with a loose version of Dragon Age's Templars as inspiration- their powers are based on slowing down or stopping entirely a mage- think of them like an EMP. They also specialize in the old sword and shield. I'm leaving it open if people want connections between the Paladins and Priests, since they both seem to use the same skill-set.

Rule 4 (This I forgot to bring up on the discussion post, but I explained it at the Chat): Mages and Paladins can access a pocket dimension where they store their weapons and armor. It's mostly tireless, and is primarily to avoid mages or paladins being caught walking around the city with a sword/staff/armour/whatever.

Rule 5: Mages and Warlocks, as mentioned below, are separate things. Despite this, they both still use staves, wands and their bare hands for magic- without a stave or a wand, you can cast spells, but it's more draining and less powerful (Witches and warlocks can circumvent this for some spells, though, like healing magic). We also thought that wands would be for more defense magic (Shields and the like), while staves would be more attack magic (IE, blowing s**t up with fireballs).

Rules 6: Holy magic is separate from other kinds of magic. See Slinky's section for full details.

Rules 7: Mages and Warlocks follow a Masquerade system, like Vampires. The simple rule of this being: Get caught, get killed (Yes, I spent hours coming up with that. Bravo me and my snarky brackets).

Rule 8: Warlocks and Mages can become Vampires. You can't learn magic after you become a vampire, mind.

Rules from Achika Chan: 1: Names are Important Business. Knowing a person or objects True Name can help you seriously fuck some shit up.

2: Thresholds are a Thing. It's basically a primitive ward that's a passive magic even non magical people do. Supernatural Things that mean you harm generally can't get to you in Your Home. There are ways around it, obviously, especially the passive kind, and the ones established by non magical people tend to be weaker and more easily broken.

Rules from Yersi Fanel:

- Being a Witch/Warlock is not the same as being a Mage.
- The Local Coven are witches and warlocks.

That being said, Linkara has trails of a Mage, not a warlock, but magic is magic and Mage Magic is compatible with Witchcraft, it's how the use it and how they process it that changes.

Fact: Witches/Warlocks use Essence to do their spell binding. Mages use Quintessence to perform magic

Main difference is:
> Essence comes from inside a Witch/Warlock but can be taken from other sources, light and darkness alike and be processed by the witch/warlock to become essence and it can be stored by the witch/warlock inside them.
> Quintessence is the raw material of reality. It is what flows through the patterns of reality and what makes magic possible. A Mage cannot make Quintessence, but can channel it from around him and mold it for magic.

As you can see, Essence and Quintessence are very much alike; the source is what differs the most. That why they are compatible. It depends of what you want the magic to do, for example: dark magic, blood magic, curses and seals are easier for Witches and Warlocks than Magicians, on the contrary blessings, elemental changes, dream magic and healing magic are easier for mages.

Think of it like this with a Final Fantasy example: Witches/Warlocks = Black Mages | Mages = White Mages.

Rules From FuzzyWezzy (Who, as a general rule, should be contacted if you need help on Witches and Warlocks):

Since I wanted to write about the coven, I have made outlines of what of how the Coven storylines will happen so I have already made multiple decisions like the casting of the witches and warlocks plus an OC for the High Priestess of the Coven (Other people wanting to write about magic users we can PM each other so we can avoid confusion).

My headcannon is that the witches and warlocks used staffs and grimoires to launch their spells or do summonings and whatnot(think of Dresden Files if you are aware of the material) to fight against malevolent supernatural forces (everything except vampires and werewolves), particularly Sage the Demon Lord.

In the headquarters of the Coven there is a huge library where all books of magic (forbidden and non-forbidden) are located since education of new and old magic users is important, based on the Austrian National Library. If there is tension between schools of magic then the library is a neutral zone.

It's not a school like Hogwarts, probably all witches/warlocks to be are apprentices to experienced witches/warlocks.

Rules made by ButterflySlinky:

I have in some of my notes (not that my notes are much good, but whatever) that Holy Spells are equal to non-Holy Spells. The difference is that Holy Spells are drawn from the power of God and Heaven and non-Holy Spells are drawn from the Earth. Non-Holy Spells aren't necessarily Dark, though.

So the witches and mages and such use non-Holy Spells, but they can do good with it, just like Suede can hurt people and/or demons with Holy Spells. And some people, like the Slayers, use a combination of Holy and non-Holy spells.

Rules Made By Astra Aurora:

"Her form of magic works in two ways: through symbols and through intent. Intent is simple- one simply thinks of what one wants to do and releases one's magic. However, that method uses a lot of magic, and it's not very practical. Symbols work by drawing, painting or carving a symbol onto something and filling it with magic. The magic takes on the property of the symbol, and when activated, it does whatever the symbol means. So magic in a symbol for fire would make whatever it was on catch fire. The symbol can be anything from a drawing to a sigil to a word, but it has to mean whatever the mage wants it to mean- i.e., a drawing of a river can't be used to mean 'light' unless the mage, for some crazy reason, thinks a river means light. People who use that kind of magic are either Black Mages or White Mages. White = spells of healing, cleansing, defensive stuff, black - offensive, destructive. It's really a matter of choice, and mages can switch back and forth whenever they like."

And that's most, if not all of the stuff we thought of. Thanks for reading, and if you're writing for Denny's Court in the future, I hope this helps you concerning Magic!

FuzzyWezzy's List of Witches and Warlocks:

Rap Critic - Uses a staff as his main weapon, established as recently becoming a full-fledged Warlock (so he'll be the main protagonist in my 1rst Coven fic)

Nella - Uses a ring chain bracelet (slave bracelet) for minor spells and a white rod for big spells.

Sursum Ursa - draws magic from her cross necklace and a wand for big spells*insert Harry Potter jokes/references here*

Porn Critic - Pornomancer

Y Ruler of Time - Still doesn't know what weapon he has but uses a lot of summonings. Partner with Rollot.

Rollot - He works in the Coven/library admnistration so he's less in the field. Partner with Y as he provides all the info for him

Leon Thomas (From Renegate Cut) - one of the guardians of the library, uses a book of spells for launching his attacks.
