lazy day all around.
i have made 2 batches of pizelles today. well, i did one batch, then my Mom tried a wafer and was VERY impressed, so she asked me to make another, cos she wants to take an entire batch home with her.
my Dad says they taste better than the ones his aunt used to make.
- it's a flat buttery cooky, pressed and cooked in an iron much like a waffle iron, only very shallow. the iron imprints the cookies so they look like doilies.
the cookies originated from gypsy cultures, and according to history, the imprints were a flowery doily design on one side of the iron, and the family's crest was imprinted on the other.
anyway, various family members on both sides of my family (my Mom's roots have Czech and Dad's have Poland) make these cookies. but i only remember my mom's side having them made with anise extract and anise seeds.
now, i HATE licorice candy. i think it's gagging. but for some reason, the anise extract in these cookies has been ok with me. it's weird. maybe cause i'm not getting that thick, sticky black mass WITH the flavor, which is probably what i don't like about licorice.
speaking of anise,... i wouldn't mind trying to make my own absinthe...
i haven't done much, and i can't believe it's already past 4.
i am glad my parents are here at the moment; though i can't wait for them to go home tomorrow, so that i can take a shower without fearing it being cancelled out moments later by my Dad's cigarette-laden smell. i took a shower yesterday morning and used my Lush shampoo (that makes my hair smell like licorice- see!) and the soap (which made the rest of me smell like bubblegum). my Mom was like, "WOW! you smell delicious! what are you wearing?"
20 minutes later, when i walked out of the house to get into the car, i was blasted by a nicotine cloud... i could have killed.
oh well.
dinner tonight will be leftovers.
