hockey is life (or rather, life is hockey)

people notice your goals a lot better when you score them on someone else's power play. and they get more excited about your goals when they're in overtime. because when people are tired of watching you try to succeed and they don't even expect you to, and then you do, that's what makes the difference.

that's the difference between a "score" and a "highlight". a highlight has substance to it, something to keep the sportscasters jabbing on for years to come. scores remain in people's memories, but highlights burn there for eternity. scores are simple flashes of Lightning that disappear in the wake of pressing news, but highlights keep Sabres rattling and Senators crying for years to come.

it isn't always best to stay behind the blue line. and checking a man is perfectly fine as long as you have no real problem with him. but tripping is foul, and foul is never fair, despite what Shakespeare told our politicians. checking leaves a man at least with dignity.

when it's your power play, treat it as if you'll never have another. and when it isn't, play your hardest in honor of your buddy in the Box. every second of every period is a new match, and every second of the match the ice is changing as new layers fly into goalie masks and new untapped possibilities are discovered.

and strategy is everything.

if you have honor, keep it. if you don't, make some up. let those screaming fans in red sweaters and riot sticks know that you are unstoppable. show the world that the American teams are the best, and not even the Devil can overcome the power of five raging Carolina Hurricanes.

and that's all you need to know.
