Entrance to the home of the Brotherhood of Black Heads (Mustpeade maja) - Pikk 26. At first (since 1517) the Brotherhood just rented this house and only then in 1531 it was decided to buy it. They started from rebuilding: a new big hall was constructed, the next rebuilding happed in 1597. The Renaissance façade was added. And what about the door, it dates to 1640. The house remained in the possession of the Blackheads until the summer of 1940 when the Soviet Union occupied and annexed Estonia. Now here located philharmonic. Some new for me facts about the Brotherhood: ℹThe Brotherhood was named “Black Heads” in honor of the guild's patron - St. Mauritius, who was an Egyptian. A profile of his head is pictured on the Brotherhood's coat of arms (see it under the entrance). ℹThe Brotherhood was founded about 1399 and had been existed till the middle of XX century! ℹIt was active only in Estonia and Latvia. But in the 17th century, a brotherhood of Blackheads was also established in Wismar, Germany. By the way it was conflict of interest concerning this building between Tallinn town council and this organization in Germany. ℹThe guild made up of young, and only single merchants and foreigners #belmova in comment below ⤵ *** #estonia#eesti #tallinn #oldbuilding #oldcitytallinn #architecture #building #beautiful #renaissancearchitecture #reniassance #tallinnarchitecture #tallinnhistory #estonianarchitecture #estonianhistory #pikktn #pikkstreet #pikk #pikk26 #BrotherhoodofBlackHeads #Mustpeademaja #architecture #xvicentury #xvicenturyarchitecture #beautiful #oldbuilding #beautifuldoor
