winter book list

So ive been reading romeo and juliet. Its part of my winter reading program. I generally do not like dark and dreary stuff. I unapologetically like happy endings and humor and witty banter and fluffy romance. But it is winter and cold and dark. (I am aware that it is southern california, and currently in the 80's. Plus, my state is burning down around me. Still.) So i picked out a list of books that felt dark and unhappy and I knew did not have happy endings. Because there is beauty in sadness and tragic endings. Even if i dont like to admit. Actually, jess just read me some gorgeous japanese poems, super short ones, a couple of lines each. Almost all sad, but perfectly encapsulated emotional moments. They pleased me because they speak to the emotions of romeo and juliet and sydney carton and the others whom i havent met yet.
My list, in no particular order:
-Romeo and Juliet
- A Tale of Two Cities
-The Grapes of Wrath
-Macbeth
-King Lear
-King Henry VIII
-The Devil Came on Horseback
-Belle De Jour
-The Making of South Africa
-The Fate of Africa
-Love For Sale-A world history of prostitution
-Humans For Sale-A study of human trafficking
So far, ive finished to Belle de jour. Its basically the diary of a modern day high class prostitute in london. She's a surprisingly good writer, witty and engaging. I dont always identify with her, but i didnt mind going along for the ride.
Im about halfway through romeo and juliet, Love for sale, and humans for sale. All very very good so far.
And im continually delighted by shakespeares way with words. Im a total linguaphile, so its so much fun to see how he plays with words and the rhythym of sentences and dialogues. Im loving romeo and juliet. The story, not romeo so much, he's a bit of a whiny brat.
