musical musings

Sometimes I think there is a cultural hole in my life. I have almost no knowledge of pop and rock music. This comes partly from growing up in a ballet studio where classical music ruled. My appreciation for music revolved around "Can I dance to it." I didn't like the Beatles until after they split up. By then my exposure to dance had grown beyond ballet to include some contemporary, jazz, and Broadway styles. Now, when I listen to the radio I go for soft rock favorites or country--I do country line dance when I'm able. But we have lousy reception and on the internet my favorite stations limit your listening time unless you subscribe. No thanks. In the car I have playlists of Celtic, Filk, and classical I listen to on the iPod. Lately I've been following a New Age station on the satellite while I work. (stuck in the recliner rather than the office with the awesome stereo.) If there are lyrics I will listen to the words I hear and not the ones I need to form in my head.

So when books I read suggest sound tracks of rock music... I go blank and move to another book. I have no cultural references and little interest in acquiring them.
