Finally done! (Sorry for the wait - my beta reader's had to deal with a seriously uncooperative couple of weeks) Total word count now comes to 16,000 words, which I am embarrassed to admit makes this truly gratuitous AU the single longest fic I've yet finished in this fandom (even Chain of Command barely made 12,000). clearly this only means I need

This was great. It had everything: angst-y drama, really hot boyxboy action, humor, and a sweet and heartwarming ending. I loved it :D

Unfortunately I know little to nothing about vampire fiction (I generally avoid it because I find it either too creepy when it's genuine horror like Bram Stoker's Dracula, or too irritating when it's genuine crap like Twilight, and I may like some angst but there is no way I could read an Anne Rice's book), so I'm afraid I've missed all the references ^^"

It sure wound up a lot more involved than I was counting on when I first had the idea. Glad you thought I managed to keep up the interest all the way to the end. =D

Eh, admittedly a few were references to things even I know mostly by reputation (plus a couple of vampire books I read back in my own angsty teen years). I'm also counting a few things more along the lines of Buffy than Dracula. =P

Oh man, reading this over again really left me appreciating the little details~ Particularly the very first couple of paragraphs, which is all FORESHADOWING (... OKAY I SHOULDA FIGURED SOL WAS A VAMP BUT I'M SLOW).

Been trying to find references to stuff; I'm pretty sure I found three (possibly four?) but... urgh I'm so bad at all of that XD

And yes, it is all so much ♥ upon rereading. Of course, you realize that your ending has opened up a fair chunk of questions and possibilities as well? ;) (..... and left me wanting more Sol/Ky)

XD You didn't? I was more worried I'd made it too obvious (I was pretty explicit about the gear=vampire comparison I was drawing in the intro notes) - but it was much more fun writing the first chapter so that Sol's nature was kept subtle for as long as possible. There was a lot of slightly more specific foreshadowing in the second paragraph particularly though, now I remember it. *g* I was actually heavily tempted to start the fic with the first few paragraphs of the last part and then tell the rest of the story through flashback, but I left it chronological in the end.

Out of curiousity, which possibly-four did you think you found? ;)

Oh, I know - but I have to admit I don't have much more of the backstory figured out than what made it into the story. ^^; (The Sol/Ky stuff took priority over that aspect of the plot - I figured most people wouldn't mind.)

Um, a reference to Buffy in the first chapter, a reference to Tru Blood & Anne Rice in the second one, and... after that it gets a bit more blurry. One of the lines of dialogue struck me as Twilight-esque, but not having read the books (I don't have the stomach for it :X) I wasn't sure. I mean, there's also Vampire Hunter D, who is a vampire who hunts vampires as far as I can remember, or the whole "one queen who made them all" reminds me of Queen of the Damned

I've picked up on some stuff such as the Anne Rice novel reference in this chapter, but vampire fiction tends to borrow so much from other sources that it's impossible to figure out what came from where OTL

Yeah - I still have this mentally classified under 'crack fic', but it didn't exactly come out reading that way, did it? ^^; Very nice to have this all finished though.

Believe it or not, that's about the only one that was mostly an accident: "Well obviously Justice has to be Vampire #0, but mecha-suited vampires don't really work, so let's refer to her like some kind of vamp royalty... huh, wasn't there some Anne Rice book about a vampire queen? Never did read it." I actually dropped a couple of specific names in the first chapter, though there is a lot of general stuff that didn't come from anywhere in particular (like Ky's comment about vampires perpetually claiming to be the 'one' example in the world who got out of being evil). Maybe I should just post a list at some point. ^^;
