So, the reunion wasn't bad. More fun than I thought it'd be. The food sucked, and the venue was tiny, but it was nice to see everyone, and the few people I was really dreading didn't show up. It's funny how ten years changes some people so much, and other people not at all. My friends and I were discussing it, and we decided a lot of change takes place in the late twenties and early to mid thirties, so we'll probably see the most change at the 20th reunion, if we go.
During the nostalgic slide show (which consisted of really badly scanned pictures straight from the yearbook -- I could have done a better job cropping them if I were blindfolded, with my left hand on the mouse), it was like high school all over again. Fifty pictures of the popular girls, and one and a half pictures of my group of friends -- the half was because one had one of my friends on stage, but the other half of the picture was one of the popular kids. My table just kind of smirked at each other when it was over.
There was a game with questions: who's come the farthest, youngest kid, changed the most, changed the least, and most interesting profession. Among our classmates, we have a female porn photographer (who won for most unusual profession) and a male stripper (who might have given her a run for her money, but he wasn't there). And both are, of course, people I wouldn't have guessed for a million years.
One funny thing. Our rival high school has their 20th reunion in the same venue that we have our tenth. A couple of our classmates went to that side of the hotel by accident, and were greeted smilingly by the welcome committee and asked if they were '87. When they informed the chick they were '97, her smile faded, and one guy swears her nose lifted six inches as she told him, "Oh. You're on the other side." Hello, it's been ten years for us and twenty for you. Isn't it time to give it a rest? It's fucking high school! Haven't you moved on to college rivalries or professional occupational rivalries, or even rivalries with fans of your favorite sports team? Come on!

I have been mulling it over for a couple of weeks now, and I think that I'm going to do it. I'm going to try Nano again this year. I have an idea for an original story, but I think I'm going to shelve it for at least a year. There is a fic that I've been working on for years now, I've got almost sixty pages in it, and that's a fraction of the outline. It's completely outlined, and
rcampuzano and I have discussed it to death. I need to get it finished, or she and
maquisleader will kill me and stash the body. So I think I'm going to try for that.
As a practice run, to see if my writing muscles had completely atrophied, I opened the story up and took a crack at it the other day when we were slow at work, and I wrote nearly a thousand words even before I knew it. So, even if I don't meet the deadline or the word count, it will give me progess, and hopefully that'll be enough to keep me going. This thing's going to be a monster, and that's daunting, which is why I think I keep putting it off. So, if I'm working toward Nano, I'll be so focused on my output that I won't think about how much is left, y'know?
At least, that's what I'm hoping!
