I've spent the better part of the last few days reading the episode thread at TWOP (it took a while; last time I checked, the thread was at 88 pages), and it's led me to some conclusions. They've been trying really, really hard to make Marcel the villain, and they did that knowing the outcome of things, knowing what it led to. Marcel is annoying, yes, and arrogant, but no more than Betty, or Ilan, or Frank, or Sam, or Cliff, or anyone. They've portrayed him as horrible, and everyone says he's horrible, but really, we've seen nothing to really shore up that conclusion. He hasn't really done anything, they've just tried really, really hard to make it seem like he has. And it hasn't stopped. Apparently, he and his friends were at a club and someone asked if he was Marcel from Top Chef, and when he said yes, they hit him in the face with a bottle, which required stitches and left a facial scar. Gee, thanks, Bravo. And the more I think about it and the more I see, he doesn't deserve any of it!
They've been giving him the villain's edit, but when you see him in the background, he's working industriously, efficiently, and quietly to help the others even when they've been completely horrible to him. Compare his reaction when the coffeemaker exploded earlier in the season, or when his pan of salmon fell (or was pushed) to Elia's in this past episode. He quietly cleaned up the mess from the coffee, and figured out how to reportion his salmon, and he kept going. Elia? Freaked right the fuck out. And did not stop freaking out. And it wasn't the first time she did that.
The others are still badmouthing Marcel, and yet, when asked what he did, the most they can say is that he "was annoying" -- Ilan's basis for hatred is that when he insulted Marcel, Marcel didn't have a comeback. What the fuck? Marcel, meanwhile, has been very diplomatic and careful in his replies to the press because he wants to move past it. That shows more of the qualities of a Top Chef than Elia's whining, Ilan's smirking, or Sam's passive-aggressiveness.
Ugh. Sorry. I guess I needed to vent. Anyway, Oscar Party @ my house this year, since Timbo's not here. :( You up for it?
