Rarewomen Exchange Dear Author Letter 2013
This is my Dear Author letter for the rarewomen fic exchange. Signups are still open if you'd like to participate. Cause who doesn't love all the ladies right!
First, thank you writer person who has gotten me. I know I'm going to love whatever you make for me so thankyouthankyou. You're awesome.
General Stuff
I love pretty much everything; I love gen, het, femmeslash, slash, multi, etc. Whatever floats your boat. And any rating is good (PG to the pornyist of porn) I love AU/AR stories, canon-gap fillers, . I love love character study pieces - it doesn't have to have plot, just subtle ruminations of characters. I love female characters socializing together, enjoying their off hours together, having fun. I like when people enjoy their work. I like female characters with power and ones who quest for power. Badass ladies who kick ass and take names. I'm not a huge fan of straight-up fluff, I find it not realistic and a tad boring - but I love a happy ending.
Squicks + Stuff
Non con is an absolute no-no for me. I don't mind if the women in the story are discussing sexual assaults that happened in their past or their fears/feelings about it. Its a part of women's daily lives, so its realistic to see it explored through the fictional ladies we love (this is especially true for female character who have a canonical experience with assault). Just don't graphically depict it for me and don't put it in a ship scenario. Other squicks include mpreg, babyfic, bodily fluids not normally associated with sex used in sex, anal in het pairings, incest, character basing, ship basing, breathplay.
I've given some extra details and prompts for each of the fandoms I signed up for; both gen and shippy stuff. I don't mind whichever way you go. I want you to enjoy what you're writing and I'm pretty flexible for what I like.
Beauty and the Beast (2012) (Catherine Chandler, Tess Vargas, any)
I just LOVE this show. I was originally sceptical, but I love how this show is so focused around the female relationships, so I want a story about that. I love Tess and Cat - I love how they are detectives and paired together and enforce justice in their city. So a casefic for these two would be awesome. I love them hanging out too, with Heather, socializing at the bar or karoeke. Cat doesn't relax very often so a gals-night in/out would be fun too.
Or, I'm super stressed about Tess leaving Cat at work, so I'm waiting for Cat to tell Tess whats happening in her life, to tell her about Vincent. So a story about that discussion, about the fallout would be awesome. OR, something set in the future with Tess already deeply involved in the Vincent situation, her and Cat taking down Murfield or controlling it or I dunno lol.
Hart of Dixie (Lemon Breeland, Zoe Hart)
lol I'm not really sure what I want here, I just know I LOVE Lemon Breeland. I love who she's become this second season, and that she's still this fiery dominating southern belle. I like how she's going through this phase of trying to decide who she is, what she wants from life. A character study piece for her would be awesome or anything with her and Zoe being friends. Cause I want them to be friends. :) Zoe could take Lemon to New York with her or they could team up for some ridiculous town event they always seem to have. I love gen, but I ship these two as well so whichever way you want to go is good with me. I also don't *not* ship Lemon/Wade hahah. And Lavon, he's cool too. You can throw any of the other female characters in too, but also any of the townsfolk.
The West Wing (CJ Cregg, Abby Bartlett, Donna Moss, Amy Gardner, Kate Harper)
These four are my favourite characters, but feel free to add in any of the other female characters you want. I love gen in this fandom ALOT - like the few scenes we get of Abby and Cj and Donna together are just the bread and butter of this show for me. I love how through these tiny scenes we know that they are actually pretty good friends. We know CJ and Abby are; they have a familiarity together that none of the other characters have with the first lady, and ditto for CJ and Donna. So I'd love anything with them just being awesome together. There can be a political thing or a social thing (like that episode where they hung out and got drunk lol); they can be shopping or discussing politics. It can take place pre-White House, during or post, I'm flexible that way.
What I'd LOVE the most is some epic feminist badass story. The women of the West Wing are feminists, even if the show isn't exactly. I love when they get all fired about about the inequalities of the world and their workplace. I love how Amy pushes back against everything and fights for what she wants. I love how Abby is bombastic and fierce and will not roll over. And how CJ uses her position to voice opinions that need to be, but she also is incredibly frustrated by her lack of power. And I love Donna's feminism, her subtle not-as-loud style. But they are also refreshing; they are not stereotypes of feminists, they are real women, real people who are depicted as having legitimate concerns about the world.
As for shipping, I don't really ship much in this fandom. I don't femmeslash anything here. CJ/Simon is pretty much my only ship (uuuug, Simon - I still haven't accepted his death). And Donna/Josh because its cute and canon.
edit: I forgot to add that I'm fascinated by the later seasons and how CJ and Kate are such vocal and prominent members of Bartlett's 2nd term. Those two (and Abby) having such a powerful influence on policy and global events, I just love that. And how they would work together in that environment (and be awesome friends too). And anything about Donna is love.
Arctic Air (Krista Iverson, any)
I LOVE this show. I'm a fan of the plane-troubles-stranded-us-and-now-were-stuck-together trope lol. I also like to see Krista taking a more authoritative role at the office. I LOVE gen for this fandom. Krista is my favourite character, so anything that explores her as a character is great (I do love character studies), a day in her life, etc. I'm also a huge (HUGE) fan of female-friendship fics, so if you want to write me something about her having a night out with the ladies in the office that would be awesome. Or if its just the ladies in the office one afternoon, all the men are out, what shenanigans would they get up to?
As for shippy stuff, I ship Krista/Bobby pretty damn hard so anything that explores their relationship is cool. How they adjust to owning/running a business together, how they navigate their past, etc. I love how Bobby loves how bossy Krista is; she's confident and competant.
You can also crossover this fandom if you'd like; with Sanctuary or any other Canadian tv show.
Star Trek Voyager (any)
I ship Kes/Seven pretty damn hard....and its a lonely place to be because its such a teeny ship. So ANYTHING about them would be amazeballs. What I like about them as a pairing is how complimentary they would be for each other. Seven is an abuse survivor, the traumatic event of watching her parents be assimilated and then going through it herself, coming out of that imprisonment decades later and adjusting to human existence. Kes has a wonderful capacity for empathy and she's so patient and caring - those are qualities I see Seven wanting/needing in a partner. And Seven is incredibly confident and empowering and she would help enable Kes to achieve her dreams and push herself further. They'd be just great together. So anything about them would be LOVE.
I love the gen relationships between all the women of this show (even the ones not nominated, so you can include Janeway cause she's awesome). I love the idea of them socializing after work, relaxing and being badass together. Like a poker game, or some late-night meetups or whatnot.
Naomi Wildman: I love the relationship she has with all the women on board. To think that this young girl has grown up with Belanna, Seven, and Janeway as role-models is crazy - think of the awesome woman she's going to grow into. So maybe a character study of her relationship with all the women on board (and you can include some men too - I think her relationship with Tom is really adorable too).
If you'd like to go the Seska/Belanna route, I'm good with that too. I can femmeslash them or gen whatever. The kind of rage and anger and hatred between them; Belanna's hatred of Cardassians and Seska's identity.
I'm also totally cool with any sort of character study for any of the women in this series.
