Evidently ballroom dance lends me an innate sense of balance when it comes to riding horses. Or so I am told. I went horseback riding for the first time in my life today. It was an interesting experience. I guess technically I was riding a pony, not a horse, but it looked exactly like the horses my sister and her friends were riding, so I will henceforth call it a horse.
Anyway, I was lucky (or something) enough to get to ride her bareback. (I still have not decided if this was a good thing or not. I daresay I shall have to try riding in a saddle before I can pass a final judgment.) At any rate, I managed to stay on well enough, and even got told I was a natural (I guess because I was sitting properly... but really, how else are you supposed to sit? If you don't roll your hips back, you can't get any sort of sense of stability). Apparently this naturalness comes from dancing. I don't really see the connection, but whatever.
I decided that trotting is not pleasant, and so strictly kept my horse to a walk pretty much the entire time. She probably didn't appreciate that, since she kept trying to break into a trot, but I definitely did. I'm not a fan of rattling about like a sack of potatoes. I suppose it would be interesting to see what it's like to go really fast, at least, faster than a trot, but I wasn't quite feeling up to the adventure today... And now I am already starting to feel sore in many muscles that I had forgotten existed. I do not look forward to waking up tomorrow morning.
Really though, I'm glad I went. It's always fun to try something new.
Afterwards we went and saw Enchanted. Very cute movie, I think I'll go see it again when it gets to the dollar theater.
And my kind and loving family has so generously shared their germs from all over the country, which combined and morphed into a very nasty cold. I had hoped to elude it, but alas, I can feel its sinister grip tightening around me with every passing hour...
