words about words

I got passed along a meme from connikins, where you're given a handful of words and you write about them. comment and I'll give you words, too. here were mine.

art: this is what I study. in addition to methods and technique, I learned a lot about perception and keeping an open mind. step inside, check your objective truth at the door and hear someone out. I'm already a little anxious about leaving a place so filled with ideas.

America: to me, "the United States" is the political term, but "America" covers all the myths and ideals, its history, its so-called character. Lady Liberty standing over streets paved with gold, endless horizons and raw potential and all that happy go-getter shit. sometimes it feels like there's so much pervasive bullshit narrative to unlearn. one side effect of dating someone foreign has been wondering how something as arbitrary as nationality could tie into identity.

words: literally building and arranging words on the letterpress was an interesting experience. typeface matters, diction matters, and the laborious process of it all demands more thought to syntax and presentation. in short: you're boned if you want big changes and it's all already on the press. so yeah, I like playing with the structural aspect of words and I'm thankful to live in an age where I don't have to write everything longhand. making words also makes me want to read more of them, too.

commitment(s): I've flaked out on a lot. crippling anxiety will ruin even the best intentions. this could segue into a lot of topics - ego, perspective, empathy - so let me just say that intuition goes a long way towards figuring out which high-stakes commitments are easy and worth it (Jamie) and which ones I regret almost every day (my lease).

distance:: temporal distance matters more than the physical, with regard to my relationship. he could be in Tucson and it wouldn't matter if we were still forced apart for the same amount of time. I wonder about physical distance with regards to future opportunity, which has everything to do with art, America, words and commitment.
