BOSS 2: Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

BOSS 2

They're baaaaaaaack!

Honestly, I avoided this drama for a long time because I was grumpy about the cast changes, but when I finally gave it a shot it only took me five minutes to fall right back in love. Witty dialogue! Lady BAMFs! Hijinks and mysteries! Ship teases all over the place!

Long story short, if you enjoyed the first BOSS, you'll love this one too.

If you haven't seen the first BOSS... I don't want to know you.

In case you've forgotten, here's the rundown of the cast:

Osawa Eriko, known exclusively as BOSS! She's smart and strong and snarky and completely badass and every single scene she's in is like A GIFT FROM THE GODS OF AWESOME LADIES. You will not be ready.

Nodate, the crouching moron hidden BAMF!

Hanagata, the eager rookie with terrible fashion sense! (We'll get into that later.)

Katagiri, the socially awkward dork who hides it under SUPER SERIOUSNESS!

Yamamura, the captain of failboat express!

Iwai, the gay horndog!

Kimoto, the moody genius, who was unfortunately one of the victims of the EVIL EVIL cast change. ;___;

She isn't completely gone, but her role is really reduced and you'll miss her fiercely. On the plus side, the drama seemed to realize the significance of her loss, because they replaced her with not one, but two great ladies:

Rika, a young MIT student and tech genius!

Tadokoro, a weirdo who doesn't give a fuck! (Also, SOCKS.)

While it sucked that we lost Kimoto, it was also really really awesome to see Osawa continuing the trend of taking younger women under her wing and turning them into badasses. FEMALE MENTORSHIPS FOR THE FUCKING WIN. \o/

TEAM! Team team team team. Unlike the first season, which was all about bringing them together, this time they're already established as NAKAMA FOR LIFE.

Goofy team!

Badass team!

THE THREE STOOGES.

Serious professionals!!

Her "somewhere, my subordinates are being stupid" face.

Remember Hanagata's totally professional wardrobe of the first season? Well, he never replaced that lightbulb in his closet, because he's still dressing in the dark.

Blue and gray argyle... with GREEN POLKA DOTS... AND RED AND BLACK STRIPES. THAT IS HIS WORK OUTFIT. THAT IS WHAT HE PUT ON IN THE MORNING WHEN HE THOUGHT "OKAY, IT'S TIME TO BE A TRUSTED OFFICER OF THE LAW."

This is actually one of his better outfits. At least he made a cursory attempt to match purple with purple.

The whole team dons quite a few costumes in their pursuit of justice...

...except for Iwai, who just crossdresses for fun.

He still has a crush on Katagiri. IT'S STILL HILARIOUS.

THE SHIP TEASES! THE SHIP TEASES. If you liked Osawa/Nodate the first time around, this season will be like an explosion of EVERYTHING YOU'VE EVER WANTED. (For those of you playing at home, Osawa and Nodate are long-time BFFs who have a comfortable relationship of banter, hanging out after cases, and waking up partially-undressed after nights of drinking. Yeeeeeeah.)

THERE IS EVEN A FLASHBACK EPISODE WITH THE BEGINNING OF THEIR PARTNERSHIP. THE HAIR. THE LEATHER JACKET. LOLOL FOREVER.

Of course, they've never changed where it counts.

I ALSO MIGHT HAVE SHIPPED THIS. Crazy? Sure. Hilarious? YES.

He's so eager! She's so deadpan! THEIR BABIES WOULD HAVE SUPER-BRAINS AND YELLOW-AND-FUCHSIA PANTS.

Remember when this chick was dating a serial killer in Zeni Geba? RUN, KATAGIRI, RUN!

So that's BOSS 2! Not quite as good as the first one, but still an above-average drama and definitely worth watching if you were a fan of the original.

AND REMEMBER: OSAWA WILL ALWAYS, ALWAYS BE BETTER THAN YOU.
