Magerarenai Onna

This drama is DELIGHTFUL. There's no other word for it. It's funny, it's sweet, it will occasionally stick a hand in your chest and squeeze all the oxygen from your lungs, but everything has a way of working out and I guarantee you'll be flailing at your screen and going ♥ ♥ ♥!!! again before you know it.

If you need a drama to make you believe in the power of friendship, this would be it.

Take (1) woman...

Subtract any social skills whatsoever...

And the result is Ogiwara Saki.

Saki is an aspiring lawyer, very driven and exact and pragmatic in all things, except she's completely clueless when it comes to social niceties and relating with people. Weirdly, this makes her both hilarious and adorable. I don't even know! She's like an alien learning to be human, you just want to root for her.

A sincere attempt at a smile.

Riko and Kou-chan are two people drawn in Saki's weirdness orbit. She's a housewife and he's a playboy...

Wait, I had a point somewhere...

Right. She's a housewife and he's a playboy, and at first they only hang around Saki because her shenanigans are better than TV, but then they surprise themselves by becoming her friends. And it is glorious.

The OT3 makes this drama, and the best part is they don't care how unconventional it is. They're a police chief, a homemaker, and an emotional robot. They take cellphone pics anyway!

I love Saki's face here, she's like WHAT IS THIS HUMAN CUSTOM I DON'T EVEN.

Even their FIGHTS are adorable. It's not like they miss her or anything, y'all! They just accidentally wandered in her building and accidentally took the elevator to her floor and accidentally rang her doorbell. COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE.

At first she's always :| and :P and occasionally :OOO but then she marvels at making her first friends (at the age of 32) and she goes \o/ and :D!!! and dances around her living room to Michael Jackson.

JUST AS CUTE AS IT SOUNDS.

Also cute is Kou-chan and his helpless unrequited love, making a fool out of himself just so Saki will noticehimnoticehimnoticehim!

HE IS MAKING CELLPHONE NOISES AT HER. You have to see it to believe it. He's like BURRR BURRRR BURRRR I'M ON VIBRATE! and she's just like why you are calling me. :| I was busy. :|

What makes it even funnier is that his character is usually so smooth. SHE'S JUST FROM ANOTHER PLANET. He doesn't know why his heart is beating like this! She doesn't notice his gifts, his carefully prepared lines and all his effort! Why can't he stop thinking about her, guys?? WHAT COULD IT BE?

Look at that deep primal lust. You only think he's a dork, but inside there's a hungry beast waiting to pounce...... or cook you dinner and excitedly ask if you like it.

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO SHIP IT.

The last third of the threesome, Riko, is also a supremely awesome character. Not only will she surprise you with her depth and sympathy, but she's also a gleeful shit-stirrer in the way only true friends can get away with. You'll love her, you'll cackle at her greatness.

I'm including these caps because I know someone will complain about the lack of Tsukamoto Takashi. HERE, HAVE HIS DISTRACTING LIPS AND BE DONE WITH IT.

Seriously, those things should be illegal.

If I had to define it, I'd say Magerarenai Onna is a coming-of-age story about adults. None of them are happy with their lives, so they band together as BFFs and say "fuck that noise" and change it all for the better. Think Katagoshi no Koibito mixed with a grown-up Love Shuffle. Then think awesome.
