The Rose
She's a new sister. They're her half-brothers who might love her when they're not too busy smooching each other. Together, gay incestuous poly longing!!! Fuck yeah!
YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT. This is about a love triangle between THREE HALF-SIBLINGS. The heroine is in love with her older brother, who's also loved by their younger brother, who carries a horny torch for both his siblings at the same time, who by turns are either trying to seduce him or trying to resist his seduction. And so on and so on. This drama has the most laid-back incest I've ever seen. When their mother catches two of them kissing and is like ??? she's told very matter-of-factly: "We're a messed up family."
TAIWAN DOES "FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC," TAKE ONE:
[SCENE]
Upon the death of her grandmother, plucky heroine Bai He learns she's actually the daughter of a rich, famous actress who made a career out of flings and unplanned children.
[CHARACTERS]
The Illegitimates.
Kui is the beautiful princess who flounces around in ruffled silk robes tossing his magnificent hair. He's shallow and spoiled but he's just so damn pretty he still gets constant love letters... from guys. Unfortunately, there's only one boy in his heart.
And it's his brother.
Jin is a hot, unattainable cliche, adored by everyone but in love with his own manpain. You can identify him by the sunglasses and liver failure.
It's part of his allure.
Fu Rong is the all-knowing older sister who misses nothing and is amused by everything. She encourages the incest indiscriminately. She's a canon multishipper. FU RONG IS THE BEST. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
My favorite character: the shameless product placement. If you haven't seen a bag of Doritos, the episode isn't over.
[PLOT]
Bai He falls for Jin in about two seconds, but he's completely oblivious (as in "oh, you're in love with a guy my age who looks like me and shares all my favorite things? who is it?")
She and Kui bond in their pining, both of them being secret members of the "unrequitedly longing for my brother" club.
When he treats his siblings like this, is it any wonder they keep falling in love with him?!
[COMPLICATION]
Spending all that time together, Kui starts looking at Bai He and getting squishy feelings...
And they're really frigging adorable...
YES. HE FALLS FOR HER. I think he might actually be the first bisexual drama character I've ever seen. He loves both his siblings! He doesn't care if it's wrong! He just wants to kiss everybody!
SO HE DOES!
Eventually even Jin realizes something's up. He sits his brother down and very gravely tells him to watch his behavior, because if he isn't careful, it could lead to incest!
And incest would just be crazy!
Because Jin is definitely not falling for her too. Oh no. He is her BROTHER. His feelings are BROTHERLY.
When Jin learns of Kui's infatuation with their sister, he decides the only way to protect her virtue is to steal Kui himself. He decides to "become gay" and literally THROWS HIMSELF at Kui, all "let's embrace each other tightly!!" while Kui claws at the floor like NOOOOOOO!
THE INCEST CANNOT BE STOPPED!
Even Bai He doesn't know what to do with this development.
[THE LOWDOWN]
So Kui loves Bai He who's pining for Jin who's trying to seduce Kui who's resisting because of Bai He who's causing Jin much inner turmoil because of his feelings for his "little sister" -- but not so much that it stops him from crawling in her bed in the middle of the night for snuggles...
Aren't they the CUTEST? This is between all the heartache and lonely ballads, by the way. You'll see enough of that in the drama. JUST LOOK AT HOW ADORABLE THEY CAN BE WHEN THEY WANT TO BE.
One of the recurring themes in the drama is how Bai He is too "ugly" to be in their perfect statuesque family, but the joke's on them because Ella was voted one of the most beautiful people in Taiwan.
SUCK IT, HATERS.
I would like to thank Taiwan for their outstanding dedication to quality.
And incest dramas.
[IN CONCLUSION]
Some dramas were just made for OT3s.
