Bicheonmu: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our OMG WAS THAT DUDE JUST BEHEADED?

Bicheonmu

He's a rebel on a rampage. She's an aristocrat with a score to settle. Together, starcrossed, swordcrossed, doublecrossed doom!

Bicheonmu is a China/Korea co-production that draws elements from both wuxia and kdrama. This basically means they lure you in with pretty, swishy costumes and angsty kung-fu romance, then everything goes to hell in a flaming handbasket laced with poison and the bitter unshed tears of lost innocence. ROCKS FALL, EVERYONE IS GORGEOUS AND THEN THEY DIE.

That isn't a spoiler, that's the opening scene.

But first, happier times! On a beautiful spring day, two young lovebirds meet in the marketplace...

Her voice calls to him so sweetly, and he pushes through a curtain of silk to see her beautiful smile...

...right before she dumps him to the ground and bitches him out.

And so goes their romance.

Jin Ha is a peasant secretly descended from martial arts masters. His parents were killed when he was a baby, by the evil, evil Tarooga family.

GUESS WHO IS ACTUALLY A TAROOGA? GO ON, GUESS.

This is where the angst kicks in. They're so sweet! He gives her hugs and kisses! She renounces her name and promises to love him forever! It doesn't last.

You hope and hope they'll just join hands and put aside their differences and have fat adorable babies --

Oh wait, this is a kdrama.

Actually, after betrayal, bloodshed, forced marriages and labor camps, Jin Ha grows an emo beard and becomes a MERCILESS ASSASSIN and Sul Ri is reduced to a bitter, vengeful shell of the woman she used to be.

I'M NOT MAKING THIS UP.

WHEN AN OTP SNAPS.

"My hatred was too deep. Even hell wouldn't accept me." Jin Ha raises an army and begins slaughtering our favorite secondary characters.

"I am not the old Sul Ri anymore." There is only so much one woman can take, seriously.

Hunky hero raging against life? Heroine with a sword she knows how to use? It's like this drama was MADE FOR ME.

Though, the promos are rather misleading -- Sul Ri doesn't actually fight that much -- but there's at least one other woman clamoring for the position of token badass, and several more who are so batshit crazy they totally qualify as dangerous.

CUTEST SECONDARY OTP EVER.

Preeeeeetty. See, they tempt you with kickass battles and gorgeous cinematography...

...then everything starts EXPLODING and CATCHING FIRE and people LOSE THEIR HEADS.

Whoops!

Take note, villains. Sometimes the woobies don't break. They bite back.
