Kevin spoiled me with paella and tortilla española tonight. Since I'm useless when it comes to cooking either of these dishes, I decided to complement his amazing Spanish food with amazing Spanish libations. I made both traditional sangria and a bizarre strawberry-pomegranate sangria, and both turned out surprisingly well. Sangria of course isn't hard to make, but it's hard to make extraordinarily well.
Both versions of sangria I made turned out to be delicious enough that I want to share. The first recipe is a combination of about four recipes I've found online and it turned out to be--hands down--the best sangria I've ever had. The second recipe is for strawberry-pomegranate sangria, which I merely liked, but others loved.
1 750 ml bottle Cabernet Sauvignon
2 cups soda water
1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup lime juice
1/3 cup sugar
3 apples
2 oranges
2 oz Cointreau (optional)
Mix liquid ingredients and sugar together until sugar dissolves. Add sliced apples and oranges. Refrigerate for 3+ hours to let everything mix together and chill well (or if you're desperate, serve immediately over ice).
1 750 ml bottle of dry white wine
1/2 cup pomegranate schnapps
1/2 cup soda water
1/3 cup sugar
2 cups sliced strawberries
Mix ingredients and chill for 3+ hours.
