VANCOUVER 2010

IT IS ON.

I adore the Winter Olympics. I am one of those rare breeds who prefer the Winter Games over the Summer ones; I don't think there's a single event I won't watch and I'm super excited that it's on home turf. Clearly my focus will be on figure skating, but I love all the sports on ice - hockey (obviously), curling (sweeeep!), short and long track speed skating. Then there are the crazy ski events (ski jump, aerials, cross country with a rifle!) and things on tracks (bobsled, skeleton, luge). What's not to love?

It kills me that I'm not at the Olympics at the moment. When they announced the games were going to be in Vancouver years ago, I told myself that I would make it to the games no matter what. Of course, life got in the way and I didn't end up applying to be a volunteer and I cannot afford to go so I'll have to settle for watching the events on tv. Finally, a benefit of being unemployed: I get to watch as many events as I want. CTV's coverage is supposed to be amazing (on at least five different channels, I heard) and if all that fails, I can always tune into NBC.

bigboobedcanuck wrote a fantastic guide for the figure skating event so go check that out. My hopes for the Canadian skaters:

+ Ice Dance: for Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir to win gold. I want this so bad, almost as much as I wanted Jamie Sale & David Pelletier to win gold at Salt Lake that I think I'm going to explode the night of the free dance.
+ Women: for Joannie Rochette to skate two clean programs. Sometimes the nerves get to her too much but if she can skate clean and be her fierce self, she will medal.
+ Men: for Plushenko to NOT win gold. There's so much media pressure on Patrick Chan to medal that I don't want to add to that, so I just want him to skate well. Plus, he's still so young! And you guys, Vaughn Chipeur is very good looking.
+ Pairs: I think Jessica Dube & Bryce Davidson are a lovely pair but I don't expect them to medal (though I would love them to prove me wrong). Positive vibes to them and Anabelle Langlois & Cody Hay!

In conclusion: for all the skaters to skate well (duh), for Tessa & Scott to win gold and Joannie to medal.

I apologize in advance to the flist for spamming you with Olympic-related posts in the next two weeks.
