My runaway children

I can't take it anymore! I have been having to put my girls on leashes the last couple of weeks if/ when they run away from me. I'm in no condition to carry one or both of them due to back issues that I don't want to aggravate, but have been having to just to get them out of the street/ store/ or wherever it is that they're running. I hate having to use the harnesses but it's for their good and my peace of mind.
I understand what you're saying about if daddy says it's dangerous it must be. I totally am not a parent to freak out about safety issues if it's small stuff. My girls have been jumping off the back of the couch and off the kitchen table since they were 24 months old, and I don't even bat an eye at it. Other parents have come over, though, and they gasp when they see the girls do their typical 'dangerous' things and I just ignore it. So you would think that my girls would understand that when I say it's dangerous, it is. They, however, don't.
I have tried explaining to them that they could get lost, that something in the store could fall on them (which I'm really scared of when we go grocery shopping or to the hardware store), that someone could see them and pick them up and carry them away and make bad choices and hurt them. They seem to understand these ideas and will repeat back some of it sometimes, but then it just goes out the window apparently.
Before we get to our destination, whatever it may be, I talk about how that in "two minutes we will be at the grocery store and when we get there we need to stay with mommy, find the groceries we went for, look at the fishies,..." etc and they have come to actually tell me what they're going to do before we go in because we've done this so much. They say "no crying, no screaming, no laying down on the floor, no running, no biting, no scratching,..." etc like it's all about what they're not supposed to do. Then we get inside and it's total chaos.
I guess I'm just really wanting this phase to pass so we can get back to peace and safety and respect.
