Evasive Engagement
Kim Heechul knew his poor Choi Siwon went through a lot to come to terms with his sexuality. He knew it wasn't easy for the highly religious man to realize that he indeed was gay. Even though Heechul was an atheist himself, he at least was patient (or he tried to be) with his secret lover's newfound realization.
It was a long and tired road but eventually Siwon stopped his worries over what his family thought. Not that he came out to them, of course. That would be the last thing Heechul would expect him to do.
Besides proposing, of course.
"Although I should be giving this to a woman as the Lord intended to," Heechul kept silent, "my emotions for you are too strong for me not to. Heechul," he said, "I'm...younger than you. You know this but I'm afraid to lose you to another. Will you marry me?"
Heechul found a secret church of the same Protestant faith as Siwon that would marry homosexuals somewhere deep in the undergrounds of Seoul. He wanted to surprise him when they started to pick out suits.
It was the least he could do for him.
One day, though, he'd forgotten to take off his precious ring. It wasn't exactly flashy - in fact, it was humble and simple. Much like Siwon's personality.
The older and more feminine man smiled at the memory of the proposal. However, that was when, seemingly out of nowhere, did a reporter approached him. They didn't bother to hide the notepad, pencil, and tape recorder. He could always smell the cheap cologne off of them too.
Why do these people like to approach me while I'm on my coffee break? Can't they just leave me alone? The performer thought as he took a quick sip from his quickly cooling coffee.
"Oh, Mister Kim Heechul!" The greasy reporter sat down in the empty seat in front of him and reached out to shake his hand. Hesitantly, Heechul reached over to shake his hand. Thankfully, it was quick and precise. As soon as he let go, he rubbed the grease off on his house pants.
However, the reporter apparently saw something that made him smirk like a snake. And Heechul couldn't trust this man anymore than he already hadn't.
"Oh my," the reporter said, "what a simple ring! Usually, you seem to wear jewelry which are more..." he looked disgusted as he said the next few words. "feminine. What made you decide this change?"
Already, Heechul was on edge. He wished this man would leave so he blurted out, "I got this ring from Siwon."
The man seemed to enjoy pushing Heechul. He enjoyed it so much that he decided to keep at it.
"Oh, a man of valor, indeed. My company's online blog and our readers simply adore that an idol of his status still is extremely humble to his Christian faith. Unlike you, of course. Your mother must be disappointed. I wonder why he decided to give you this ring... Would you care to answer this among other questions for my blog?"
Shit! Heechul thought. I can't believe I just blurted that out! He already felt horrible for letting his temper get the better of him. How could he? It wasn't just his career at stake anymore - it was also Siwon's. There was no way he could out him like this, from an online blog especially!
He got up and finished his coffee. "It was a gift. I must have put it on the wrong finger." He reached over and took it off. It broke his heart to place it on his right hand ring finger but he had to. He mentally made a note to himself to place it back when he was absolutely sure there was no one around. "Sorry, but I have to get going. I have to go rehearse!" And then he took his leave.
He knew the reporter was angry and was probably going to defame Heechul on his site. Of course the management at SM Entertainment wouldn't be happy with him but when were they? He didn't care if he got ‘punishment’; he was used to it already.
What mattered to him was what happened to Siwon.
The guilt swelled up and he had to go see him. And apologize. Of course, the man wouldn't know what just happened in the cafe, but Heechul just wanted to hear those three words from Siwon. The three words he'd never thought he'd want to hear from anyone.
"I forgive you."
