I think I may have found Minecraft Silent Hill.
I've been pretty busy with work lately, so I hadn't had the chance to play the Adventure Update. I messed around with the pre-release a little, was mostly impressed by the little things. The warm-toned torchlight contrasting with blueish moonlight, for example, or the amazing new landscapes generated by the improved mountain biome.
So today I had a few minutes to spare, so I finally updated to 1.8.1. Spawned in one of the new swamp biomes. Several pools of lava had developed on the surface- a fire swamp? I wandered aimlessly a bit, harvesting mushrooms and admiring the river nearby, until I saw a tower in the distance. It was clearly the most interesting feature on the horizon. I was drawn in.
The village was, of course, entirely abandoned. NPCs are planned for 1.9. Still, there's a difference between knowing the villages are empty and actually wandering into one. A three-story tower overlooking the village. A field of wheat, complete with an irrigation trough, just ready for harvest.
And then when I started exploring the other buildings, and discovered what I couldn't see from the tower.
An enormous ravine cut through the town. It went down and down forever. Carefully avoiding the ravine, I continued exploring the village. I walked across the roof of one building, landing in a fenced-in yard behind it. The only direction to go was inside the house. The house had a second door, but when I opened it, there was dirt and gravel blocking the exit. I went back into the yard and tried vainly to jump over the fence, finally collecting a dirt block to give myself enough height to get over it. I went to look at a larger building full of bookshelves visible through the windows, but when I got to it, I found that it didn't have any doors.
Notch mentioned on his Twitter feed that the villages would appear close to the player's spawn point. He said they'd be useful for shelter when you're first starting out. He said the inhabitants just hadn't been added yet. I think he was hiding the truth. Something terrible happened in these villages, and the player character is the only survivor.
