Shitty night again. I handled it a bit better, though. Finding out a patient died really puts things in perspective. Crazy busy, was in blood bank and micro, and Squidward called off AGAIN so I only had the Great Wise One in heme. Usually, there are at least three people on for morning rounds - our busiest time - from 0600 to 0700 (me, the heme tech and the chem tech) but when Squid calls off, we're screwed. Especially since we don't have a person in the processing area as our normal morning tech is off for surgery. (No one else from that dept. is willing to come in before 0630. Yay. Great teamwork.) The guy whom I kept having to run over to micro to get his positive blood cultures... he's the guy who died. Came in yesterday shortly after I left at 0700... and was dead by 0900. His blood culture bottles were positive for TWO separate species of bacteria - one gram negative rods, the other gram positive cocci. Holy shit. No wonder he didn't make it. Poor old fella.

So, anyways... who wants to bet that Squidward won't be in tomorrow either? Yeah, I know. Sucker bet. No takers. Don't blame you. That's ok.

I will leave you with my mantra from last night: I will do what I can do. Patients come first. Thank God I'm not in management. Repeat. Maybe add some deep breathing.
