ceej: ohhh, yes. i think Brendon totally blindsided Ryan in a way. he's animated and affectionate and sincere, and then for whatever reason, Brendon also thought Ryan was just, like, super cool. he thought Ryan has cool taste in music and Spencer was cool and he was serious about being in a band, and Brendon had never met people who were serious, and Ryan kind of found he liked and then got caught up in being That Person for Brendon, whatever that meant. he was someone Brendon really admired, and that was cool.
jadziadrgnrdr: and as they got more famous and made more music together he had to realize that the geeky ADHD kid with no friends that walked through Spencer's grandmother's door is not the same front man of a platinum selling band... it's a bit sad but he's proud of them all. still ryan has trouble sharing his affections
jadziadrgnrdr: again even platonic ryan/brendon operates like this for me. it's a-okay when ryan picks up hot blondes or even when brendon picks up random girls and fucks them but when he really shines his light on someone like Shane or whatever Ryan gets a little ... not sad ...but something and he realizes he's being ridic but he can't help himself
ceej: yeah! it's like a platonic jealousy. he's used to being the one Brendon zeros in on and just watches and is impressed by.
ceej: i always kind of wanted someone to write THAT angle too. a story where Brendon and Ryan's relationship has always been platonic, but maybe Brendon gets his first boyfriend, which makes it even weirder, because it kind of confuses the reaction for Ryan more. he knows he doesn't want to sleep with Brendon. that's never quite been their relaionship, and yet he's still sort of envious and bummed about things.
ceej: and there's a whole adjustment that has to happen

jadziadrgnrdr: maybe ryan is confused too and he tries to make out with brendon but then he's like "hmmm i'm not even a little gay." and he's ponderous because he has messed around with spencer when they were little and just discovering their dicks and then again later with Trevor so if he has all this emotion and affection for Brendon why can't it translate to romance? Meanwhile Brendon is just devistated by everything what with his emotions all over his sleeve at any given moment
ceej: auuuggh, oh, that's perfect. i can definitely see ryan doing that, trying to make sense of it. and poor Brendon! because he's probably into whatever guy he's dating -- Shane, let's say. and he and Shane are going to move in together, and it's supposed to just be a good time for Brendon, and he and Ryan have never had a sexual relationship, but there's also been that sexual tension. Brendon had a crush on Ryan, he did, before he even fully realized it, and when Ryan starts to think, at first, that maybe he's attracted to Brendon sexually, that he really wants to be, most of Brendon is like, no, he's moved on. he's got something else good, and yet part of him is still really, really interested. Brendon's thinking, dude, please don't ask for that from him, because then he might give it.

jadziadrgnrdr: Then like Shane joins them on tour all happy he can do so and he senses the tension immediately. he's not sure what happened. he was so accepted before but now ryan is being all weird with him. he thinks maybe becasue now he's gone from being that cool guy they hang out with who does videography for them to that dude that's dating their lead singer and as cool and awesome as they are, they're still straight dudes who are probably weirded out by shane and brendon's relationship and it makes him sadface
ceej: aww, Shane! especially because, like, Spencer and Jon sense the tension too, and they probably have a better idea of what's going on. maybe Brendon and Ryan haven't stated to them plainly, but they've been around Brendon and Ryan's song and dance a long time, and with Shane in the picture, like. maybe they never actively wondered what would happen with Brendon and Ryan, but they're not entirely surprised by the tension either.
ceej: so Shane thinks everybody's in on something he's not. and Brendon tries to tell him it's fine, but it's Brendon. Shane knows when it's really fine and when Brendon's just trying to make it fine.
ceej: Shane and Brendon talk about it in this oblique way where Brendon's clearly annoyed and yet he's always just saying, "whatever. Ryan's being Ryan," and not really saying what the actual problem is. eventually Shane's like, "I know I'm supposed to be filming, but if this is too weird for them, maybe I shouldn't stick around." he wants to be there, but he also doesn't want things to be difficult for Brendon and the others. they have to be able to work together. so he can leave if that's what it comes to, but Brendon's adamant, saying, "no. no, I want you here, too. they're okay with it." Brendon needs Shane there.

ceej: i know! they work it out though, because ultimately Ryan's straight. there's still some kind of attraction between him and Brendon, but sexually it's probably not going to happen, and Brendon steps up and says that he doesn't even want to risk it. Ryan loves his girlfriend. he should stick to that. Brendon thinks he's pretty in love with his boyfriend, and he doesn't want to jeopardize that, so they take their time to be weird about each other, but it gets better, and eventually they're great friends again! cheek kisses on stage and what not! talkative Ryan and the whole band smiling and Shane filming all of it!
