So I was jogging around the military base yesterday when I finally got why Sheppard would want to join the Air Force.
They have HELICOPTERS.
Really really cool ones.
It shouldn't have been such a shock, I mean I've been in planes before and watched fighter jet airshows and everything, but this was somehow even more super cool.
There must have been a training exercise or show-day or something. The Military College doesn't usually seem to have flying things around, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen people/cadets at exercises. But the other day there was a helicopter flying runs around the base with students/soldiers strapped in, with the doors wide open, and when they circled back to the main lawn the 'copter hovered while the people inside threw down ropes and scaled down.
!!!
It was very awesome to watch.
Then the 'copter would land and the next group would get in, zing around the college, then rinse and repeat.
It amazed me so much to see the helicopter just hover like that. I'm sure I've seen helicopters before, maybe not so close, or maybe I haven't except out of tv. They are loud, and they just ... hang there ... like magic.
I could hardly believe and I more-or-less understand the physics of it! I can't imagine what it would be for someone from an earlier time, to see this great monstrosity just hanging there as if held up by God.
The wild thing was that when it landed the blades seemed to be turning at the same rate. It was strange. I kept expecting it to bounce into the air.
Super loud, though. Had to turn the ipod way up to hear over it, and I was quite far away. But it was nice to see - I run through the college a lot, and I tend to appreciate it more for the view and the route then the area itself. It's good to remember what it is.
