The "kids just happen" line was what brought it to me that we're seeing the conflict between two different paradigms. The expectation that it's just what people do would make sense in a monolithic culture, but omni mutatens. And relating to my rant, people only "do" what they know how to.The other weirdness in treating people the same regardless of sexual potential is suspicion. Seriously, lots of people are afraid of being thought of indicating attraction and as such avoid contact, talking, or anything that could be misconstrued. This ends up making us think that foreigners (who rarely have the same hang-ups) are hitting on us, had people accusing me of flirting on someone I see as a sister, second-guessing whether it's okay to show affection for family members, and... ugh, Puritans still have their ripple effect on us.
Oh, and the "nice guys" again, using the ambivalence inherent in different forms of social interaction as a supposedly safe way to project their desires without honestly communicating them. Which then makes people suspicious of anything resembling the same. It obviously isn't rape (unless it is), but still... dudes, ye're ruining it for everyone else.
