Last night I dreamed that I was at some kind of sf/fantasy convention, taking part in a writing workshop. We were given a starting setup for a story, and we had to finish it within twenty-four hours. The setup was that Wesley Wyndam-Pryce and Spike had disappeared, or been captured, and Buffy and Faith had to find or rescue them. The setup had Buffy and Faith accepting some kind of dodgy or unethical deal in order to get help. There was also a bit hinting that Spike had been through some kind of traumatic experience recently, which had left him with PTSD, and he had to sleep with a teddy bear, which I thought was very much out of character. (There was a poignant scene with Buffy holding the teddy bear.)
In the dream, I was explaining to Kathy that if I'd been writing the setup myself, I wouldn't have had Buffy and Faith accept the dodgy help, but since they had, the rest of the story ought to explore the consequences of them having done so. I didn't want it to be as straight up preachy as "Reptile Boy," but I didn't think the dodginess should be ignored, either. Then I was sitting with a bunch of random dream strangers discussing how to continue the story, and trying to explain to then the difference between external and internal conflict, and between plot and theme.
There were escalators and flowering shrubbery involved too, somehow. I dunno. Brains are weird.
