LICENSE TO THRILL!

Jul 31, 2008 13:20

A trip to the DMV to renew my driver's license didn't turn out to be az horrendous az I waz expecting. In fact it went pretty smoothly and quickly, without a hitch. Tho' I did see some old guy getting ready to bash the brains in of some more young Phillipino girl working behind the desk. The old guy waz demanding someone that speaks "American!"
While awaiting for my number to be called I doodled up this little critter-

I like how he turned out.

Working in a recordstore exposes ya to all kindz of cool artwork, plastered all over the cd and album covers. Course lots of great artwork is diminished by being squeezed onto thoze cd covers, not likes in the old dayz when vinyl records displayed a much bigger and intense image kept fresh tightly in shrinkwrap over a printed cardboard glossy album cover.
We have a pretty extensive heavy metal section, which alwayz givez rize to great album covers, usually depicting horrific violence and bloodshed with tonz-o-satanic imagery. It's been kinda inspirational for me lately, wanting to tackle thoze same visages of decedance.
But also there is some REALLY good artwork too, and these two have stuck out the most for me lately-
This one for a Symphony X album-

and this one for some group called Slowmotion Apocalypse-

Now thoze are some nice album covers. I have no idea what the hell any of the bandz sound like, but right here iz a case of where I would actually buy a cd on a whim cuz of thier awesome cd covers.
Don't tell me you never bought a record because of it's cover. We all have. Heck, tell me which ones you bought cuz of the artwork, I'm curious.
Many a record I bought because of it's album cover, course maybe it's not the same nowdayz with the cd. CD covers just don't have that same ol' punch.

Then sometimes, I'll pick up a record just because of how BAD the artwork is, or subject matter.
Take this one for example-

Not that the actual artwork is bad, but in the context it came from, it's just plain hilarious! 80's heavy metal album covers are priceless, and this one, with some mullet sportin' cyborg lookin' all wigged out is a masterpiece. Some may call it a "Disasterpiece", but it's gold, baby!

I wanna job making album covers!
That would be the life!
