The khipu might be considered more archeology than art, and hence more likely found in The Museum of Natural History (I haven't checked, but that's where they had the Greenland exhibit a few years ago). You might inquire there, too. (More your field than mine, and if you've already checked, apologies.)

I'd simply been hoping to be pleasantly surprised, as they had a rather large collection of African and Oceanic pieces that are normally classed more as ethnographic than artistic.

Last time I was there, there was only one quipu on display - they don't seem to put them out very much.
