Dress Diary: Kragelund Kirtle - Reworked and Finished

Jul 06, 2010 16:52

I did cut off about 20 cm from the circumference of the upper sleeve, and it's corrected the dumpy-arms problem somewhat.

They're still rather shapeless and loose, though, and may take cutting down farther to make them attractive. Or there just may be no saving them.

It's acceptable at this stage--enough so that I finished the seams and I intend to wear it as-is--but I feel that unattractiveness is just going to be characteristic of this dress, or at least this dress *on me.* It's much less tailored than the Moselund kirtle, and so trying to size something that will fit a trim waist, a sizeable bust and rather muscular shoulders is probably a losing battle now that I've been spoiled by how pretty the Moselund kirtle looks on me. One of the stylistic points I've really only realized since my latter college years is that I really do need to wear clothing that is tailored through the upper part of my torso and upper arms, and the Kragelund kirtle just...isn't.

There are two parts of it, and pretty much only two parts, that I would be willing to reuse in another garment. The first is the pleated gores, which were easy and quick. The other is the neckline.

Overall verdict: probably better-looking on a man than on a busty girl like me. This will probably be the only iteration I make of the Kragelund kirtle for the forseeable future. When I make a face in the mirror every time I put it on, I'm not likely to invest the effort again.
