The only major tip I have for you is that no matter how hard you try to keep it from doing so, velvet on velvet shifts as you sew. In other words, watching the direction of the nap, and using more pins to hold things in place, rather than less is helpful.

Silk and rayon based velvets usually fray faster than cotton velveteens, but all velvets need edge binding imo.

I do finish edges nearly by default, these days, and was considering bias tape or some such for it. Am making a bag for all my gaming dice, as the containers are getting to the age where they're deteriorating, so it shan't be washed much. And I did read that about the pins--thanks.

I always find keeping a little masking tape on hand when sewing velvet is handy, as it helps to mop up the fluffs that result from the fraying, and can sometimes occlude the seams.

:) They're coming along fairly quickly, now that I'm done with the complicated shirt. I'd dyed up a pot of gold yarn a couple weeks ago as a break from embroidery, so I had it on hand, finally.

If they felt up too small for me in the wash, they're totally yours. IIRC you're smaller than I, and I'm 8/8.5
