I've changed my eating habits, my mother has changed her thinking habits.

A few weeks ago, while my mother and I were making small talk with a woman we hadn't seen in a while, my mom mentioned that I'm currently vegan, and the woman responded with something to the effect of "Aren't you concerned about protein? [My 22.5 year old daughter]'s been vegetarian for [unit of time], but I make her eat chicken ( Read more... )

I just read my mother's quote back to her. She resisted for a minute, then laughed.

So for my internship, they are letting me do an independant project on a consumer segment. I decided to do vegetarians/vegans etc. Anyhow, I found this statistic I thought you would find funny in light of your post. Apparently, according to a 2002 poll, in a survey of 11,000 individuals 37% of those who responded "yes I am a vegetarian" reported that in the previous 24 hrs they had eaten red meat and 60% reported they had eaten meat, poultry, or seafood.

Wow....

I knew that people were stupid, but that's a pretty shocking stat.

Yeah the whole survey/article was pretty interesting. I still am not sure about 4 yr olds who suddenly decide that they want to be vegetarians. I'm not totally sure they understand the issues. And some of their parents said they still fed them meat, and just told them it wasn't. Great job building trust there. I'd love to chat with you sometime on AIM about your own reasons. I'm trying to get some personal opinions so I can better understand the consumer segment. Any sites you recommend? Though, kinda makes me feel evil to view such a personal issue from a totally business standpoint. Also, LOVE the chicks love a vegetarian icon. Where did you find it? I would love to use it as clip art in my presentation.

Realized that I never responded to this...

The icon came from a PeTA ad campaign, IIRC. If you look on my userpics page there will be a link to my LiveJournal pictures page (which you can go to directly), where I have a larger version of the image, and the site where I got it.

I'm cool with talking about my veganism. As much as there are many influencing factors, I view my veganism as a largely financial thing - a one man boycott of the animal product industry, with an eventual (ideal) goal of driving them out of business or getting them to drastically change their practices, at the very least. As they say:
