Character: Riku
Fandom/Series: Kingdom Hearts
Original or Alternate Universe: Original

Canon Used: All of the KH games, none of the manga or novels.

Age: 15
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Appearance: Ta-da! Yes, he will be wearing the hammerpants.

Personality: Riku is king of the world-at least, that’s the impression he’s been given from everybody else around him. He’s spent the past fifteen years of his life as the most knowledgeable kid on the islands, the one who always had a plan, the strongest fighter, the one everybody else wanted to be. That’s what he’s used to, and his personality reflects it. Riku’s been on top of the mountain for so long that he’s begun thinking that he simply belongs there. He’s arrogant and cocky, sure that nothing else in the worlds is going to be able to best him. But it’s a good-natured sort of arrogance; although he’s arrogant in thinking that he can come out on top of whatever situation he’s thrown into, he’s not boastful. He’ll accept that he’s the best and know it, but neither will he throw that in someone’s face. He prefers to let his actions prove his claims for him, instead.

In spite of what his history may lead one to believe, Riku likes to have fun. Back on Destiny Islands, he and his friends could while away an entire day, racing and swordfighting and dreaming of the day they would finally leave the islands for the outside world. He does have a sense of humor (even if it doesn’t show itself much after leaving the islands), and enjoys teasing his friends. He can also be quite sarcastic and caustic if he tries, though-this tendency will usually be seen when he’s upset or angry about something.

Riku doesn’t deal with negative feelings well. He tries to bury insecurities and hurt feelings under masks of arrogance and anger. Instead of dealing with his hurt when he feels that Sora’s betrayed him, Riku gets angry. He’s not upset that Sora abandoned him, he’s just angry that his friend would go gallivanting off on his own adventure while their other friend is still missing, of course. Riku has a very difficult time even admitting this to himself, let alone talking to somebody else about it. Similarly, he hates seeing his mistakes brought to light. Riku has a reputation for being the best, and anything that might hurt that reputation needs to be buried, hidden far away where nobody else can ever know about it. He’ll deny that he ever made a mistake until the ramifications of it are staring him right in the face, and even then, he’d rather run away from it than face it. The easiest way to make Riku hate you is to constantly bring up his many failures. His biggest failure, falling into darkness and allowing Ansem to overtake him, was due to his feelings of inferiority after he went toe-to-toe with Sora for the first time in Hollow Bastion. Unable to accept that he was possibly less powerful than his best friend, he plunged himself into the darkness to make up for that failing.

Riku’s lived his entire life thus far on trusting his instincts-sometimes it’s led him wrong, but many times it’s apparent that this is due to somebody else playing off his insecurities to sway his thoughts one way or another. For instance, Maleficent was able to convince him that Sora had abandoned him in Traverse Town, but only after Riku had gone to see for himself. But although Riku may allow himself to be swayed by other people’s words at times, he demonstrates a crazy level of intuitiveness when he remains firm. At five/six years old, Riku was able to tell Sora that somebody else on another world was hurting, and that they were looking for help-and then was able to tell Sora how to help that person (by opening his heart and reaching out). That level of intuitiveness allows him to reach out and help people when they need it, and to know when he is needed elsewhere.

Riddles are not Riku’s thing. He likes things to be straightforward, without a lot of fluff clouding his perception. He tends to see things in black and white a lot of the time: Sora abandoned him and rebuked any attempts he made to make amends, so Sora is his enemy now. Going along with this, Riku can be very shortsighted. He only sees what’s right in front of him, jumps to conclusions, and doesn’t think about the repercussions of his actions. He’s currently in the middle of coming to disaster because of this tendency, but he’s yet to learn his lesson from it.

On the softer side of things, Riku is one of the most loyal friends you could ever have. Even at his angriest with Sora, he was trying to kill Sora, rather than turn him into a Heartless-at first, this may not seem like an important distinction, but to Riku, becoming a Heartless was a fate worse than death, one he wanted to save his friends from no matter what. He would willingly walk through hell for Kairi’s sake (and working for Maleficent probably counts as having done so), and in shown to be more than willing to sacrifice himself if it means keeping his friends safe from harm. While searching for Kairi, he even went so far as to kidnap two of the Princesses of Heart, believing that finding his friend justified anything he needed to do to get there.

He has a ridiculous crush on his best friend, Kairi, and it is around her that all of his defenses break down. Riku would do anything for Kairi, no matter what it was she asked. When it comes to love, Riku is fairly inexperienced. He’s had a girlfriend or two, sure, but nobody has ever meant as much to him as Kairi does, and so he’s almost hesitant when it comes to her.

Overall, Riku is your everyday teenage boy. He’s a cocky jerk, and in Luministi it’s like to be even worse as he struggles to find his footing once again, a teenager amongst a sea of “adults.”

Strengths/Abilities: Riku is a fighter and you will never be able to convince me that he doesn’t at least have a background in dance, too, considering how often he’s drawn dancing XD, and a good one at that. He’s a bit of a powerhouse, able to vault from laying on his back to chest-height, and was for a long time the strongest fighter on the islands. These days he’s even stronger, having allowed the power of darkness to flow through him-but this can also work against him, too, as discussed below. While on the islands he fought using a plain wooden sword, he's since upgraded to a blade known as Soul Eater. This blade is quite similar in shape to a bat's wing, and is blue and red.

Riku also exerts great power over the Heartless-he is able to summon and control the Heartless at will (though as the heart of Luministi is intact, he won’t be able to summon them there) and create shadowy replicas of people, known as Anti-forms. These Anti-forms will act according to his will: if he’s just showing off, they’ll simply walk around. If he’s angry (which is when he’d be more apt to actually create one), they can and will attack and fight, using tactics such as melting into the ground and splitting into three separate forms, only one of which is real.

He is also able to use corridors of darkness to move between worlds-obviously this power will not allow him to escape the town, but he can use them to move from one location to another.

Weaknesses: Although Riku may be stronger due to his ties to the darkness, he’s not invincible. Using his power too much winds him (simply carrying both himself and Kairi through a dark portal from Neverland to Hollow Bastion leaves him gasping for breath), and although he may be allied with Maleficent he still doesn’t trust her entirely enough to use his power regularly only when Sora’s around, see, he has special powers too, Sora!

Aside from this, Riku is human and can be injured as such. His powers of darkness give him any fortification against physical injury.

History: (in the interest of allowing anyone who wants to to remain spoiler-free, I've blacked out any sections of Riku's history pertaining to information learned in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. Highlight to read them!)

Riku has always been an active player when it came to his own fate. He grew up on a small chain of islands known as the Destiny Islands, but was always curious about what lay beyond them. And from a young age, he knew it was possible to leave. After all, there was an older boy that had managed to leave the islands for the outside world-“I bet he’s gotten really strong,” is what Riku imagined happened to him. Shortly after the older boy’s departure, Riku himself met a visitor to the islands from the outside world, a tall, dark-haired man who showed up on the play island one day. The two talked, and after Riku confessed to wanting to get stronger to protect the things that mattered to him, the man presented him with a key. “…its wielder you shall one day be,” the man intoned. “And you will meet me, friend-no ocean will contain you then. No more borders around, below, or above, so long as you champion the ones you love.”

The man told him that he had to keep their encounter a secret, otherwise all of the magic would wear off. True to his word, Riku kept quiet about their conversation, refusing to even tell his best friend Sora what they’d talked about. Very soon after, there was a spectacular meteor shower visible from the islands, which would lead to the introduction of Riku’s other best friend, Kairi. The day he and Sora met Kairi for the first time, the two boys went exploring in a small cavern known as the Secret Place, the younger boy convinced that there was a monster within. Although there was no monster to be found, Riku still made a discovery that day: as Sora left, Riku turned back and saw a large, golden keyhole, shining from the normally plain wooden door that had always been in the cavern. Although he didn’t know it then, that keyhole would, in time, allow him to go on a journey of his own.

Riku never really forgot Terra, or his encounter with the keyhole in the Secret Place, but both instances faded to the back of his mind as time went on. He grew stronger of his own accord, forming lifelong connections with both Sora and Kairi. The latter of the two had come from the outside world, had appeared the same night as the meteor shower-that was enough to pique Riku’s curiosity in her. But as they grew, he found himself drawn to her in other ways, as well. By the time the three of them decided they wanted to leave the islands, he had developed a bit of a crush on the younger girl, though he would be loathe to call it that.

Leaving the islands was Riku’s idea. He’d wanted to go for as long as he could remember, but he couldn’t fathom leaving Kairi behind. So it became a group thing, the three of them making plans to leave the islands together, by way of a wooden raft.

It was a flawed plan from the start, but the three never got the opportunity to test their mettle against the sea. The night before they had planned to set sail, a storm hit the Destiny Islands. Riku knew immediately that it was no natural storm, and when he made it to the play island, his suspicions were confirmed. The door inside the Secret Place had been opened, connecting it at once to everything that lay beyond. Had he been a little less cocky, Riku might have been wary of the darkness that was flowing throughout the islands, might have worried about how it was affecting his home, but as he was still functioning under the impression that nothing bad could ever happen to him, the darkness held no fear for him. He willingly accepted its presence, and used it to leave the Islands behind.

Unfortunately for Riku, his acceptance of the darkness set the tone for the rest of his adventure. He woke up in a place known as Hollow Bastion, separated from both Sora and Kairi. He met a witch named Maleficent there, who took him in under her wing and worked her influence over him. She told him that she would help him to find his friends, but when she came to him with news of Sora’s location, she told him that he had been abandoned by his friend. At first Riku refused to believe her, refused to accept that his best friend would have replaced him so easily, but when he met up with Sora in Traverse Town, his fears were confirmed. Sora was venturing with two new friends, who refused to accept him and allow him to travel with them. Ego bruised, Riku retreated, allowing anger to cover up hurt feelings as he returned to Hollow Bastion with Maleficent. If Sora had decided that he was too good for him now that he had that Keyblade, fine. If Sora didn’t care about him, he wouldn’t care about Sora.

Riku devoted himself to finding Kairi, searching the worlds and committing several deplorable acts along the way. But even as he kidnapped Alice from Wonderland and Jasmine from Agrabah, he was able to distance himself slightly from his actions-after all, it was all for Kairi, he told himself. He would do whatever it took to find Kairi.

It was a dangerous path he walked, trying to exploit the darkness to find her. Riku himself didn’t quite realize the ramifications his actions would have, even as he lost himself more and more to the darkness. Maleficent helped him along this path, giving him the ability to create dark portals to move between worlds himself-but finally, he found Kairi. “Go to her,” Maleficent directed… but before he would reunite with Kairi, he would butt heads with Sora once more.

It was inside the gigantic whale Monstro that Riku ran into Sora again, while he was trying to decide whether the puppet Pinocchio had a heart or not. “Enough with the games!” Sora said, trying to convince the puppet to go back to its father. Riku, who had watched in silence while his friend changed into someone entirely unrecognizable, could be silent no longer.

“But Sora, I thought you liked games. Or are you too cool to play them now that you have the Keyblade?”

All of his frustration with the boy he’d considered his best friend was bubbling to a head. But far from realizing that Riku was hurt, Sora just pushed him farther, accusing him of being on the wrong side. When push came to shove, Sora was willing to fight him over the puppet, rather than combining forces to save Kairi. So when the Parasite Cage swooped down on them to attack again, Riku took the out and escaped to Captain Hook’s pirate ship through a dark portal, leaving Sora behind. He’d tried to be the bigger person, tried to extend the hand of reconciliation, but Sora had once again spurned him, proven that he (and by extension now, Kairi) weren’t as important to him as a mere puppet was. By this point, he was done with Sora.

Upon reaching Captain Hook’s ship, Riku finally was reunited with Kairi. However, she wasn’t the same Kairi he’d known on the islands-this Kairi had lost her heart. As he looked at her lying there, he silently vowed that no matter what it cost him, he would find her heart and see her wake up. Although he’d been careful not to trust Maleficent thus far, he whirled around and demanded to know what he could do to help her. Maleficent responded by telling him of the Princesses of Heart, explaining that if all seven were brought together he’d surely be able to recover her heart, and by bestowing upon him the power to control the Heartless, to make them do as he bid.

Riku is determined, now, and armed with the powers to do anything he needs to to get Kairi’s heart back. He’s come this far, already found her body… now all he needs to do is find her heart. And he won’t fail.

Canon Point: Just after Monstro in the first game; Riku has just found Kairi on Hook’s ship and been given power over the Heartless.
