Awww. The poor little girl with the lump makes me afraid for my old man. He's got a lump, nowhere near that big, but treatment isn't an option. I can't find a vet within 300 miles that treats rats. I know he'll have to be put down, and that scares me. Any advice on how I could do that at home without a lot of pain and stress for him??
Good luck with the other girls. How are they around you? They look pretty calm and friendly in the pictures.
Im afraid there is no way to humanely euthanise a rat at home yourself, unless you're a vet nurse or vet with access to the right meds and equipment

Thanks a lot for your advice. I really appreciate it.
Mind if I print your reply out to take with me? I'm going to call around tomorrow, when they open, and see what I can do. I don't care what they want to charge me, I just don't want my boy hurting.
Thanks. I had the pleasant surprise of learning one local clinic had started to expand into small mammal practice. I decided to have them both put down. I'm still not sure I did the right thing. Dizzy was the worse of the two, and like yours, he was still eating, active, and affectionate. Azzy had a smaller lump, but they're brothers from the same litter. They were just over two years old, and absolutely devoted to each other.
When I dropped them off, the staff was surprised at how friendly and trusting they were, even with complete strangers. Not too many people in the area seem to really take the time to raise them like that. The nurse said that she'd taken care of them herself, and they didn't feel a thing. They looked like they were asleep, curled up just like they used to.
Shit. I'm sorry for going on and on about this. I really miss my boys something awful, and it was so hard to think it was their time. It's like losing family. Thanks for the answers. I appreciate it.

Any vet worth his salt should welcome advice on things he's not so experienced with :)
