My brain does weird things sometimes. At the moment, it's stuck on palindromes.
Yes, I don't know why. But thank goodness for wikipedia, because you can find out anything about everything on that site.
Latest discovery (this one's for Helen): A palindrome in Latin! "In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni" ("We enter the circle at night and are consumed by fire").
I'm probably the only person who gets weirdly excited by finding a latin phrase that's a palindrome, but just let me have my little moment of "oooh aaah", ok? :P
No, ok, the real reason I got stuck on this was because I was sitting eating dinner with the host fam., day-dreaming, and my dream-self got stuck in a game a little like Jeopardy (except more interactive because you have to write down stuff for every question). Anyways, we must have been in a category related to writing and/or techniques, etc etc, because the announcer guy asked us all to write down a palindrome. If we put at the same one as our neighbor, we'd lose money. (Really, my day-dreams just go, I swear...) So my dream-self is stuck, because all I can think of "radar", and I'm like, "Oh, man, what if I really was someday in a game show where I had to recall a palindrome, and all I had under my belt was 'radar'"??
Weird, I know. I already said so.
So courtesty of wikipedia, I know have a small stock of words and phrases.
"Civic"
"Kayak"
"Level" [That's kind of embarrassing. :P]
"Refer"
"Sagas"
"Sexes"
"Solos" [Ouch again]
"Deified"
"Racecar" [That was one I was trying to remember and couldn't]
"Rotator" [:P]
"Was it a cat I saw?"
"A man, a plan, a canal: Panama" (by Leigh Mercer)
"Go hang a salami! I’m a lasagna hog" (by Jon Agee) [I'm impressed by this one]
"Doc, note: I dissent. A fast never prevents a fatness. I diet on cod."
"'Do nine men interpret?' 'Nine men,' I nod."
"Now, sir, a war is never even-sir, a war is won!"
And those are just by letters. This one is by symmetry. "First Ladies rule the State and state the rule: ladies first" What would I do w/o wiki?
Finally, there's a whole POEM done with lines as the unit.
DOPPELGANGER
Entering the lonely house with my wife
I saw him for the first time
Peering furtively from behind a bush --
Blackness that moved,
A shape amid the shadows,
A momentary glimpse of gleaming eyes
Revealed in the ragged moon.
A closer look (he seemed to turn) might have
Put him to flight forever --
I dared not
(For reasons that I failed to understand),
Though I knew I should act at once.
I puzzled over it, hiding alone,
Watching the woman as she neared the gate.
He came, and I saw him crouching
Night after night.
Night after night
He came, and I saw him crouching,
Watching the woman as she neared the gate.
I puzzled over it, hiding alone --
Though I knew I should act at once,
For reasons that I failed to understand
I dared not
Put him to flight forever.
A closer look (he seemed to turn) might have
Revealed in the ragged moon.
A momentary glimpse of gleaming eyes
A shape amid the shadows,
Blackness that moved.
Peering furtively from behind a bush,
I saw him for the first time,
Entering the lonely house with my wife.
Now if THAT doesn't blow your mind...
So there you have it. Now I will never let that preoccupy me again. ...And I'm sorry to those of you who have to read this post. Hahahahaha.
