Fool for the Cyber-Monday hoopla: Advice Sought

Nov 26, 2007 13:31

In the name of being able to write-off the taxes on my moderate freelance income this year (and because of course I couldn't just save my gas receipts like a sensible person), I've decided I need to buy a new laptop before the end of the year.  Or possibly today.

Any of you computer-savvy people care to give me any advice?  I want something highly durable with a lot of memory and good processing speed for my audio.  What brands should I trust? Avoid?  About how much do you think I should be prepared to spend (because you know my instinct is to go for the cheapest thing on the Circuit City website and then bitch when it turns out to be a Fisher-Price lunchbox with some blinking lights taped to it).

Of course, to put things in perspective, I've spent the past four years surviving on a used Thinkpad with a broken keyboard, no CD-R drive, no internal wireless, one poorly-placed USB port, and a barely-functional pirated operating system.  The lunchbox is looking pretty good.

Tanks in advance...
