So I have some time before I head over to Post's friends' house (Post, stuck at his catering job, will be arriving later), so I figured, why not write one of those sappy 'What I'm Thankful For' posts?
-The obvious blessings: my family, my friends, Post, my healthy body, my comfortable life, my cat, my job.
-I'm thankful almost everyone I know, near and far, seems to have found people they enjoy with whom to spend the holiday.
-I'm thankful I'll be having dinner with loving people tonight. I'm thankful I've got time to myself now.
-I'm thankful people will probably be polite about my salad, even though everyone tells me no one brings salad to Thanksgiving.
-I am thankful not to have the 1-to-10pm cops shift, like the reporter I ran into earlier at the lake will be working today (she was thankful to be the second-most-junior staffer; she gets Christmas off). But I'm also thankful to remember my NPR colleagues I spent so many Thanksgivings with after college.
-I am thankful not to be trying to produce a mid-afternoon call-in show on a holiday.
-I'm thankful the world is not more violent than it is, that we are in no more danger than usual, that more of us do not want, that so many of us have people to love. Things are hard, but I am thankful they are not worse.
-I am thankful for cypress trees, crunchy leaves, stormy weather, almost every song ever recorded by the National, the taste of persimmons, pelicans, single malt scotch, old fantasy novels, my running shoes, how funny my cat looks trying to annihilate a catnip mouse, the feel of old jeans, and all the other sights, sounds, tastes, and sensations I'll enjoy today.
Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!
