I went to the GreenFestival in Chicago yesterday. There were lots of samples of food. At one place that sold cacao nibs covered in dark chocolate, I had this conversation with an employee:
Me: Are they vegan?
Her: No, they're dairy-free, but not vegan.
Me: What do they have in them that's not vegan?
Her: Another manufacturer makes the chocolate coating, so we can't guarantee they're vegan.
Me: But they're dairy-free?
Her: Yes, but we don't know if they're vegan.
I've never heard of chocolate with egg or meat in it, and I suppose it's conceivable that they could contain honey, but if that were the case, she could have just said, "They contain honey." They should know the ingredients of the thing they're selling, shouldn't they? I got the impression that they didn't understand what vegan was, and that knowing the ingredients wasn't enough to know something is vegan.
Also, I bought a jar of coconut butter and a jar of "cacao bliss", which is coconut butter with raw cacao in it. They are so rich and heavenly.
