I am so sad to hear that! Was he sick?

Very. Apparently it was some combination of leukemia, pneumonia, and a blood clot, although I don't know details.
It must have been fairly sudden; he seemed well when I saw him in October.

Update--I just heard from John Peterson, who says,

"Sorry, didn't give more detail. He was diagnosed first with a blood
clot (what got him in the hospital initially). He was then diagnosed
with leukemia and then pneumonia after admission. I've not received
word on final cause of death, but those three at the same time aren't
good news. I will send out an address for cards/pictures/etc and
where donations can be sent as I get them. I would assume that the
service will be one of two places - either First UCC Asheville where
he attended (www.uccasheville.org) or Warren Wilson chapel."

Thanks for the info. I'll be in the middle of a 10 day strike on the 29th, so I'm thinking I'll attend the memorial.

Looks like you had a beautiful wedding :)

Thank you.

I wish I could to go the memorial, but I don't think I can make the time or money happen.

What's up with the strike?

My hospital is unionized and we've been trying to negotiate a new contract since before the last one expired in July. The issues are the same as the 2 other times we've gone on strike: the hospital wants to change our (good) health care coverage to one that requires everyone to see an unlicensed "health coach" who is privy to your medical records and employed by the hospital. If you don't comply with the health coaching, you have to pay your own health insurance premiums.

The second is that the hospital wants to take away retirees' good health care and replace it with a health savings plan that caps out at $30k.

And of course there are smaller issues of safe staffing, lift teams for patient and staff safety, wage increases, etc.

I'm employed by Sutter Health. My hospital is one of several in the area calling a 10 day strike this month. You just might see it in the news.

That situation sounds pretty awful--I hope there IS national coverage. What they're trying to do is appalling, all the more so because a hospital really should know better...

Please let me know if there's anything I can do. Considering that I'm not remotely local and don't work in healthcare, I'm not sure what that could be, but the offer stands if you can think of anything!
