Quotes

“ Within two minutes, or even less, he had forgotten all his troubles. Not because his troubles were one whit less heavy and bitter to him that a man’s are to a man, but because a new and powerful intense bore them down and drove them out of his mind ... This new interest was a valued novelty in whistling” (5). Tom is easily entertained and is likely to not hold a grudge too long. That’s what makes the book so much like a real story written from a real boy. It focuses on little disagreements for just a minute then it gets back to the real story.
“ Saturday morning was come, and all the summer world was bright and fresh, and brimming with life. There was a song in every heart; and if the heart was young the music issued at the lips. There was a cheer in every face and a spring in every step. The locust trees were in bloom and the fragrance of the blossoms filled the air. Cardiff Hill, beyond the village and above it, was green with vegetation, and it lay just far enough to seem a Delectable Land, dreamy, reposeful, and inviting” (11). The author goes into great detail, but does not bore you. His writing style is purposeful and unpurposeful at the same time, because after this passage he goes into the part of the story where Tom tricks boys into whitewashing a fence.
