It is hard to be far away. It doesn’t matter if the distance is that of an ocean, or a difference in belief, or the threshold of death- separation is hard.
It would be harder still were it not for the priceless legacy that Grandma Norma left me: that of my underlying spiritual beliefs. Grandma was influential in my life in this way; she helped me gain the tools that enable me to cope at this time when my heart is heavy. If it weren’t for Grandma and her broad-minded and wise outlook on how to conduct the inner life, I’d be a mess- it is likely a lot of us would be feeling far worse. Instead we have this lovely gift that enables us to see Grandma’s passing not just as a sad time, but a promise that we will be united again. A belief that we are not alone, and no one is truly gone- we have memories and joy and laughter and the love of one another. This sustains us ‘til we meet again, and teaching this to us this was Grandma’s special gift. I was blessed to have spoken of this with Grandma a few years before I moved to Australia, so she was aware of what she taught and the depth of meaning it holds for me. I hope that she can look upon this world from her new spiritual existence and know that we all still value the gift spiritual fortitude that she shared, and know that part of her lives on in all of us whose lives she touched.
Today I am remembering Grandma with tears and smiles; smiles as I recall how she’d shake her head and give a small chuckle at some of Papa’s sillier jokes, and I am shedding a few tears missing the way Grandma could discuss books and music and politics with her unique insights into this world. I am remembering her with a sigh but also with hope and optimism as I mull over the ways she imparted her special spiritual outlook to me, and giving thanks for that amazing gift. So let us remember Grandma daily for that means that she will always live on in our hearts. Let us remember her with laughter & love, let us remember her with happiness & joyful hearts, and let us remember her whenever we get together and eat smorgasbord, or discuss the latest in news & views.
I love you Grandma and miss you very much. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher, friend, and grandmother.
Love always,
Rachael
