I'm going to have to move.  The house REALLY stinks.  I mean, it smells like a giant cat came here while we were out today and peed all over the house and it permeated through all the surfaces of the house.  I've crawled around on my hands and knees and can't find any one spot of concentrated PEE smell - it's just this general piss smell that is in ( Read more... )

UGH! Pee smell! The worst!
Have you tried just covering the carpets with baking soda, I mean really pouring it on thick, and letting it sit for a few hours (go to a movie or something), and then vacuuming? I did that in a stanky rent house once and, while it wasn't perfect, it certainly helped. Use a new vacuum bag so you have good suction and change it right away after.
Do you rent or own?

We own; it's hardwoods throughout, and we have rugs instead of wall-to-wall carpeting. But I do that whenever the dog pees and it makes a HUGE difference!!! I just leave it to soak up the moisture for like, two days. It gets all yellow and clumpy and and then I vacuum and spread out some more! I smelled all over the rug and, aside from the one area I already know is the dog's place to do her crazy peeing, it was all fine. I swear to god it smelled like it was coming from around the perimeter of the room, like at the doors and windows ( ... )

I was going to ask was it humid. I think everything smells worse when the humidity is high, which, sadly, is most of the year. I doubt it's option c) but I bet your answer is really a combination of options a) and b).

Light incense on damp days? Spray yourself heavily with perfume, so you smell yourself and not the pee smell?

I started throwing essential lavender oil all over near vents and stuff. It helped and made me very relaxed, so I didn't care about pee smell. LMAO.

I used to say the SAME EXACT thing about our office! Everyone else thought I was crazy, but I sprayed it with this allergen reducer/air purifier foam, let it sit for 30 minutes, vaccummed, repeated 3 more times and then aired out the room for a day and now it's all better. :)

Well, and oddly enough, it's gone today.

It seems to happen only when it rains really hard...

Maybe they pee in your nose and that's why only you can smell it.

I've heard that you can use a UV or black light to locate the pee, then spray it with an enzyme (that you can buy at Pet Smart) to break down that pee smell. Supposed to also help the animal not keep peeing in the same place because they can't find that spot anymore. Might be worth a shot, I heard people swear by the process (UV/black light plus the enzyme stuff)

D had gotten this oriental rug from someone who was moving, and they must have had an incontinent cat, because nothing I tried (baking soda, pet carpet cleaner, etc) could get rid of the smell. it was sooo much worse when it was damp outside. Finally gave up and tossed the rug because I didn't think it was worth treating the whole rug with enzyme cleaner.

If you figure out how to de-pee smell a house, please let me know how. As far as I can figure, I am just going to have to rip the carpets up. And that is why I don't invite anyone to my house right now.

Well, it only smells like that when it's raining for 24 hours...we've determined it won't be fixed until we have a new front door and refinish the floors. The front door will be replaced in the next month or so, but the floors...that's YEARS down the road.

As soon as we sell the bike, we are replacing the carpets with hardwood laminate. But, the bike actually has to be placed on the market first, and Nick is dragging ass about that one.
