Sorry if these kinds of posts aren't allowed (feel free to delete if that is so). I'm usually a lurker in forums and LJ communities. I'm kind of internet-shy. Haha.

Anyway. I have to do an intersectionality project for my Psychology of Gender, Sexuality, & Race class (due on the 29th, lol), and I decided I wanted to do it over race/gender and ( Read more... )

This Tumblr post is a good summation of current racist casting (TLA and Prince of Persia) with past racist casting practices (blackface, yellowface, redface, and brownface, with examples of a number of these practices).

There's also some good stuff about Up, Mulan, Trini (the original Yellow power Ranger from the U.S. remake), and Asian-oriented cinema in there. Also, a comparison of the intentions of Mike and Bryan and Hiromu Arakawa (creator of Fullmetal Alchemist), which I think is key in understanding why anime isn't ~*~racially ambiguous~*~ like Shyamalan claimed it is.

I don't think I've ever seen that post. O_o Thanks!

I still haven't seen Up (shame on me, I know), so I'll have to check it out. Hehe.

You're welcome! ^_^

Up is wonderful. Though I must warn you that the first ten minutes is one huge tear jerker.

I have excerpts from books (hopefully your university has the books) and articles from a class I took this past summer that will probably interest you. I can send them to you via email. Just PM me your email address, and I'll send them to you.

I wrote and essay for my English class this year about racial stereotyping in movies, books, animation and video games I think. I used TV Tropes (lol) to get ideas about the stereotypes and other sources for the actual support of said ideas.

I can send it to you if you want (although I haven't gotten it back from my lecturer yet).

if this is for a university course, I'd stick to books or articles in journals (reputable journals). Google Scholar is your best bet for that.

Off the top of my head, I'd read Richard Dyer's White - and he has some other article on old Hollywood and preferential camera/lighting techniques used back in the day. Can't remember what the article's called but I'm sure you can easily find it.

Yeah, I usually use Scholar and my campus's databases. I go to a small school, though, so the selection of databases aren't as expansive as that of a larger university's. But thanks for the suggesting Richard Dyer. I'll definitely look him up.

The Slanted screen is a great documentary on Asian Americans in cinema, Mako is in it, as is his amazing scene in the sand pebbles.
