LJ is the kind of place where you talk about your dreams so you don't have to relate them to other people, right?
Last night I dreamt that my thumb got amputated by someone and a robotic prosthetic thumb got glued on. It had one of those little lights on it that you turn on to see keyholes in the dark.
In other news preparations recommence for our move. This is going to be a tough one, because the rent we will have to pay will increase and what with the bond etc that's going to hurt finances. More boring stuff you don't talk to actual humans about I know but it troubles me. Thank god I didn't try to make it to America this year, disaster well and truly averted there.
I'm trying to prove to myself that the Dada movement was not so much anti-art as it was anti-art-industry. That is, to be merely anti-art would not involve being an artist, unless you could not appreciate the self-defeating reality of that. Duchamp in particular seems to attack art critics more than art itself. Art criticism at the moment seems to be controlled by a private, secular, elite intent on distancing itself from the public with use of specialised dialect. The collage I'm currently in actually sets out to teach this dialect and in order to understand any of what a post-graduate is talking about you need to have taken the course. What is the point in criticism if the public cannot understand it?
It certainly does not serve any practical purpose for the artist. The public get Dada though, I think.
A guy who points at Duchamps fountain and says "That is bullshit" has totally got the right idea.
Anyhow.
